for me this hands down goes to the guitar solo from "easy" by the commodores. Just disgusting, jarring, horrible.

shoot TEK, you got youtube, there's probably 50,000 videos of kids playing out of tune, with 6watt amps, that are WAY more sucky than the commode-doors

you wouldn't be one if you actually sat down and played the things instead of spending 6.5 hours every day creating goofy threads on TB.

One that comes to mind (and isn't too far off the Commodores tone) would have to be the guitar tone for the solo in 25 Or 6 To 4 by Chicago. Like Easy, the solo does fit the song, but I always thought the tone was horrid.
Neil Young, as much as I admire him, has managed to produce some truly terrible guitar tones, although I think he nailed it perfectly for Rust Never Sleeps.
As far as bass goes, I seem to recall during the late 80's/early 90's when Rush changed it's sound to be slicker and more refined. Geddy's bass tone went from his monstrous, grinding, KILLER Ric tone, to this putrid, snappy, rubber-bandy sounding tone. The song Force Ten is a good example of this.
Um....OK....I do NOT normally listen to the Thompson Twins, but in the 80's, you couldn't avoid hearing them, even after stuffing wads of steel wool in your ears. It's bad enough that the song Hold Me Now is like getting a root canal without novacaine, but that bass sounds like they weren't even trying to dial in a good tone.
LOL! This has been fun, actually!

I understand you about Rush, Eric. The Ric and Fender tones are untouchable, but the Steinberger sound in Force Ten makes me smile because of its plucky twang in Geddy's hands.

Force ten is everything i hate about 80's mastering, Immersed in tank reverb? check, thin and uninspiring Eq'ing? check, Bitcrusher quality tape? double check. Really i don't understand how mastering went from this to what it became in the 80's
Some of the remasters of DSOTM are easily some of the best sounding recording i've ever heard. I understand it had an extreme budget and everything but seriously. Of course the mastering trends of the 90's and 00's are no better, compressed and flat. Noisy to the point of clipping, certainly some bands pull this off quite well(frost comes to mind) but most of the time it just means a sacrifice of dynamic range for no good reason.

you guys are gonna hate me .........
i like the commodores.
eh ... not as much as the gap band. drop the bomb on me? ... it makes me dance.
worst tone i can think of .......
fine young cannibals - she drives me crazy. 9.8 on the annoytheshitouttame meter. i would suspect that she's driving him crazy because they dont want anything to do with any she. guitar ... horrible! vocals ... horrible! drum snare soundey thing ... horrible!
midnight oil - beds are burning. i'm not even sure if the bass or guitar tones are bad, because i'm just tortured to wincing by the vocals in this POS song. who told that dude that he could sing??? .... liar! i mean ... what is he trying to do? i dont know about the places you all live ... but philadelphia radio stations still play this song and they need to knock it off ... but they still play bon jovi too ... so i'll keep listening to my mp3's instead.
beastey boys - fight for your right. the solo is the worst. i've seen the boys play this live a few years after they learned how to play musical intruments and i think they figured out that solo sux ... when they played that song, the new and improved solo was awesome!
the first two arent even guitar or bass. i guess, even if the guitar or bass is bad, i'de rather hear that than a bad singer ... like mike stipe.

No! I agree! I like the Commodores! They made some of the baddest jams back in the day!
Now, the Fine Young Cannibals definitely had some of the worst guitar tones ever, bar none. Totally agreed. Midnight Oil did as well. But the whole thing with the Beastie Boys is that they were trying to create bad tones. That's what made them so great. They knew what they were doing. And you take any metal band doing a full-on sonic cover of their early stuff, and it translates well!
As far as Michael Stipe....well....I'm not sure what to say about that. I will give cudos to REM for the impact they had on music....but I'm not about to run out and purchase any of their music anytime soon.

Well if you hate peter Garrett than you should move to Australia, he was our health minister from a about 2007-2009, basically there was a government controlled initiative to put more insulation into houses to conserve energy, however instead of using fibreglass dust or wool they used metal insulate, and because they weren't installed properly they sat on top of livewires, around 5 people got electrocuted and died. There was also a big conspiracy about misplacement and wasting of funds. he was fired So quickly after the debacle.

Well even the beastie boys know that "fight for your right" is a load of bunkem, fun bunkem, but still bunkem.

I think its more about how a part fits the song vs. an over all tone. Like Feildy from Korn it fits vthe music but not may favorite. Same with generic slap to me.
I like the Gap Band, Parlement & Funkedelic (Flash Light bass).

ya Parliament and their smash hit: AQUABOOGIE
psycho-alpha-disco-beta-bio-aqua-do-loop ( and an interesting tidbit of trivia )
that word has the same syllables as super-cali-fragi-listic-expee-ali-docious from Mary Poppins

As far as I'm concerned, anything that even remotely relates to anything Disney is top notch in my book. And I'm not ashamed to admit it.

My kids growing up during Disney's silver years affectionately think of Phil Collins as that Disney guy who did Tarzan sound track, That's how they remember him. No one thinks of him as the brilliant drummer he was in their generation.

No he didn't! but the annoying as all hell Gated reverb snare drum sound was first heard on peter gabriels third solo album, and then phil collins whored it to pieces, so i still associate them.
