In a few simple words, it was awesome! cheers

The Canadians were tough! Even though they never were ahead of us during the entire game, they managed to answer for almost every goal we scored. And they out-shot us by twice as much. But Team USA kept it together!

This game was significant in that the United States have not beaten Canada during men's Olympic hockey since the 1960 Winter Games at Squaw Valley.

We have a distinct advantage living so close to Canada in that we have a handful of Canadian TV stations on our Comcast lineup. So it was almost sad to watch CTV after the game as the Canadian commentators tried to make sense of what had happened. And they noted that the streets of Vancouver became a little quiet after the loss. I mean, I love Canada, and they are good neighbors to have. It's a beautiful country, and I enjoy spending time there when I can. And even with the loss, it wasn't an easy slaughter by any means. The Canadian are tough, and they are some of the absolute best at playing hockey, and they should be. After all, hockey is their sport. But ultimately, everyone knew this was going to be a huge and decisive showdown.

Also, as a fan of the San Jose Sharks, it was cool to see one of the Sharks play for Team USA, and four Sharks play for Team Canada.

And what a bummer for Martin Brodeur! Now it looks like Team Canada might not have him in the net for their next game against Germany:

OK, interesting hockey factoid. For anyone who follows the game at all, have you ever seen a goalie score a goal? It does happen. If Team A is losing by one point during the waning minutes of a game, they might elect to pull their goalie out of the net to put another attacker on the ice. Normally, each team has a center, two wingmen, two defensemen, and the goalie, for a total of five attackers. Replacing the goalie with another attacker gives them a man-advantage at six attackers. This creates the same scenario as a power play, and can give Team A the advantage to be able to score another goal, and tie up the game....BUT....this also means that Team A's net is now wide open, and Team B can sometimes get off a wild shot to score again. This is how goalies can score. Assuming that the goalie for Team B gets the puck, and can slap it all the way down the ice unobstructed, he can score. Martin Brodeur has done this several times.

A few years back, New Jersey was at home playing the Montreal Canadians for the Stanley Cup playoffs, and it appeared they were going to win as the score was 2-1 in favor of New Jersey. In a last-minute act of desperation, Montreal pulled their goalie....and....

Now, I'm not a fan of the New Jersey Devils at all, but this is the sort of thing that I absolutely love because it is so incredibly rare! For the conditions to be right takes an awful lot!

i'm from philly.

two words ... ron hextall

he would end up scoring at least one a year. one year he scored two.

ah ... they mention ron in the clip.

i've also seen him come out and check centers and wingers and get into fights. it starts out, as he was the goalie to perfect comming out of the crease to cut down the angle on the approaching offense, and then the opposition just gets frustrated and takes chep shots at him ... till he would retaliate. if there was no defenseive players around, he'd handle it himself.

nutcase.

i went to a fight one night and a flyers game broke out.

i love hockey.

True enough! And Ron Hextall is on record as the very first goalie in the NHL to score a goal. Awesome! He was quite the goalie!
