Linda and I want to wish all of you a very happy and safe New Year.
I also want to thank you Guys for making this place what it is. We might be a small group, but having all of You here means more to me than you will ever know.
Here's to a rockin' and bass-tremmin' 2010!
Cheers!

yep, to all of you as well for 2010. Hope everyone still has a job, can meet their financial and moral responsibilities, and can rock in the basement/studio/stage and enjoy all the months to come in 2010.
maybe this year Eric will find his Yamaha BB on CL for 100 bucks and we will see him very happy. ( once he butchers it for a trem )

We just stayed in and watched the countdown on TV, as we're not too crazy about being out and about in the insanity over New Year's.

Cool beans! I spent the day with my folks and my oldest friend. My mom's boyfriend caught and cooked three crabs the other day, so he brought them over and we had a dinner fit for a king. There isn't much else that tastes better than fresh Dungeoness crab drenched in melted butter on garlic bread. It was a very western Washingtonian dinner, topped off with a spinach salad with walnuts, dried cranberries, and a poppyseed vinaigrette (I like food and cooking...can you tell? ). After a quick game of chess and a laid back jam, I got picked up by three of my former coworkers (Kevin, Kaes, and Ashley), two of whom work at the Seattle Children's Theatre. We stopped by a party at another stage tech's house at the very south end of Seattle, hung out, and watched Doctor Who episodes and the South Park movie until about 20 til midnight.
Now, every New Year, they "blow up" the Space Needle with a spectacular fireworks show. The Children's Theatre is located about 100 yards west of the Space Needle (both buildings are located in an area called Seattle Center that has museums, amusement rides, theatres, and is the site of festivals such as Folklife in the summer). Of course, the Seattle Center is jam packed with people who are there to see the fireworks, news vans (this event is all over TV), etc etc. There is a porch on the third floor of the SCT that has an awesome view of the Space Needle and it's above all of the hubbub around the building. In other words, we got a box-seat view of the event. Parking is insane in downtown Seattle any day, but it was especially bad last night, so we just parked in the loading dock of the theatre. Kevin brought his Wii to pass the time after the fireworks show and another one of our friends, Don, an actor who performs in many SCT productions who we met up with at the party and followed us over to the theatre fetched his TV that he has been keeping backstage and Kaes brought taquitos. We watched the fireworks (and got tons of kickass photos), someone else on the porch gave us a mostly full bottle of champagne for helping them with something or another, then we headed downstairs to the green room. We set up the Wii, made some taquitos, and played Wii sports until about 4 in the morning. The intent was to play Wii until all the congestion and traffic thinned out, but it was too much of a good time to just do it for a little while.

Wow, Martin! It sounds like you had a great time!
And as fellow western Washintonians, both Linda and I can attest to the allure of fresh caught crab as only can be had here.

the only thing I remember about lobster/crab is when we went to our favorite restaurant about 3 months ago, and the family at the table next to me was asked to come up and pick the lobster they wanted out of the tank, and the little girl was crying her eyes out that her daddy was gonna let the cook kill a living animal---
too funny!!!
Christmas was good up here, NYE was good ( no weather related incidents, no deaths in the family for the older folks, no wife still as my girl is still not looking to get married ), and it looks like everyone here on the board got a few musical goodies, and in 2010 we actually may see a bit more posting activity for mp3 clips and videos.
40WattSun is starting to progress, AlienProbe is on the launchPad, and my band CodeWhiskey is still together which is a miracle after a very rocky summer of 2009,and the kids on the board are not in any trouble that we know of.
one more thing, any clips you post on your myspace page that I say are g.r.e.a.t are, but are nothing like your Billy Sheenen sounding soloing. ( and you envy my talent --huh ) - I'll never get to the level of what you do best -

hahaha My mom's folks are from around the DC area and OH YEAH....killer seafood. Such a different variety than what we have up here. I'm thankful to have spent another year in Washington--it's a perfect place for me right now.

I can easily say the same thing about you, Bro. I will NEVER have the same level of understanding of the fretboard as you do, period. The fact that you can play flipped, and in so many different tunings shows what I consider to be true and honest talent. The stuff that I do....well....it's just jerking off, you know?
And fear not. As Alien Probe continues to evolve, you will hear some more of my off-the-wall crap come through.

i love all kinds of crab. dungeness crab is more like lobster than crab ... or maybe i just never had it fresh.
but nothing compares to maryland blue crab! i recommend if your in that neck of the woods ... the crab trap, st. michaels, md. newsprint paper tablecloth, pitcher of beer, hammer, pick, nutcracker, and a 5 gallon paint bucket of crabs dumped right on the table ... heaven!

But again, I'm not trying to be anyone but me, and nobody knows better than I do about my limitations as a player. I'm nowhere near the "best" out there, and I'll never claim to be. I just do what I enjoy doing, and that's enough for me.

yeah ... i cant find a decent jackson or charvell or hamer thats set up how i would like. that one amimbari posts is sweet. the gibsons are too tuff to find and they want way too much for them and them and the epiphones play like a plank.
the graphic i layed out below is based on warmoth parts and will be built ... whenever i get around to it. i'm still building the last one ... different pickups / caps / possibly a preamp.

OK, all kidding aside. You are correct, Stephen. You do hear me doing that very technique, and it's still one that I use a lot now. It's actually pretty simple to do. The hard part will be in trying to describe it in a typed thread like this.
The way I do it is similar to doing ordinary hammer-ons where the ring and index fingers of the left hand are hammering and pulling-off on the neck, while the right index finger is tapping up higher. The only difference is that, instead of your right finger tapping, you are sort of cupping your right hand and sliding the side of it up the strings while the left hand is hammering and pulling. The result is that you end up pulling out a bunch of harmonics. Now, you also need to have quite a bit of gain on your signal in order for the harmonics to come out. Like, if you were to try this with a totally clean signal, you wouldn't hear anything except for the strings clanking a bit. But since I use a ton of distortion, I can get them out, no prob. This is also how I get my pinch harmonics to scream so loud. I've actually seen people in the crowd cup their ears in pain when I do this!
Of course, that just means that I did them properly.
Anyways, did I manage to make any sense?

I think I've seen videos of what you're talking about. You see what notes on the fingerboard fit with the nodes by the pickups and slide your finger or something along the string while playing notes on it with the other hand...I don't really know how to describe it.

Oh, HELL yes!!! Sounds great, Stephen!
John! I had no idea you were a fan of Keith's! That's totally killer! The first time I saw them was back in the mid-90's, and I was in the second row in front of Keith. I also got to witness him ride/destroy his Hammond, and I was literally overwhelmed to tears!

I've never been a fan of instrument smashing, but what emerson does live is godly.

I see your point - just smashing an instrument to pieces is inherently dumb...espeically if its a set piece every night... but giving it a bit of abuse? well, that is more interesting!!! as long as its in the pursuit of getting crazy noises... ah - the joy of hearing keith Emerson or Jon Lord crash that reverb unit! My brother once has an old Hammond reverb in a box on a cord and would have it plugged into his spare amp...bring it out at the end of the set , swing it round & slam it "BOOM" on the floor! yep...lasted about 3 gigs...!

That's one of the things I've always dug about Raven, John. Not only the brutal tunes you Guys create, but the brutal nature in which you present them! I know there were many good reasons why Whacko wore a helmet! Come to think of it, didn't you and Mark also pad up a bit?
