Quite the comparison, Mike.
I was actually cringing during the first video, since it brought back memories of the very earliest of days playing out....and just how awkward it was. But, it's the way it has to start out for everyone!

the only difference of "us-vs-the-kids" is when I'm done beating up on the guitar, the next day I'm sore, and they aren't....lol

someone asked me if I EVER did anything note-for-note with the band..... all I could say is "not if I can help it"
Geezer Butler is a fantastic bassplayer, Ian Hill can keep a tempo, but when I play people's existing stuff ( not with the mp3 ), I will do anything to make it different
I'll never be accused of standing in one spot and playing 1/4 notes with a pick...lol

You took the words right outta my mouth, Mike.
Although, we cannot discount the expertise of "simpler" players, either. There is something to be said for being able to hold the groove together in a solid, yet simple, manner.

haha ya, simple playing can be relaxing and many people prefer it...here's a guy who always posts in TB, and we always tease each other on the different approach...
I could "note" play this in a heartbeat, but never ever play it the way he does....

He's got such a great approach to it, doesn't he?

all his stuff is played that way, and I even asked him to jam something on his DB with a bow if he had the time...
it reminds me of my grandfather and father playing in their youth ( Dad was a drummer, and GrandF was a violinist )

Mhmm that kinda bass playing reminds me why I started to play music in the first place.

hmm, playing classical music was your inspiration from the beginning, and you just couldn't afford a 8,000.00 DB and you chose the lesser of the 2 dollar value evils
only you know the answer to that one.....

No, man. I just used to play folky stuff like that on bagpipes and tinwhistle and whatnot. And then when I quit doing that, I realized that the bass guitar could not only do that, but whatever the hell it wanted to and therefore I should keep doing it, no matter what anyone thought. My folks were a little disappointed.
