I approve on the pickup! I have one of those DiMarzios laying around that I got from my old teacher and its got a nice "ballsy" tone. In the bass I had it in, it sounded a lot like the bass from "I am One" by Smashing Pumpkins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc__oUqoPu8
That bass is pretty weird, I like the look of it!

i've seen these before.
definately weird.
comming of age in the 90's and getting far, far away from the hair metal as much as possible is why, i believe, bass building has gone back to such traditional styles. 10 years ago i wouldnt be caught dead playing something like this ... although i really wanted to.
as you guys know, currently, i'm trying to get away from, and actually kinda fed up with those traditional styles. p bass this and jazz bass that ... gimmie something with wicked curves and pointey. this bass would do it!
nice find.

MM,
I guess Tak was just another company back then trying to get into the "I'll bet we can mass produce a bass and guitar that would make a BCR look tame" attitude??. I have no clue
As you know the acoustics are excellent..that thing is not a one of a kind, as a friend of mine from youtube has another one, he never knew what model it was either, so he calls it his TAK - X-bass. He got it from his uncle's estate when he died who didn't know either.
Here's another TAK redStripe, just not as wild:
and here is my friend Nick using his:

I had no idea that Takamine ever made basses!
But I can absolutely vouch for the fact that they made/make one helluva 12 string acoustic guitar.

Their acoustic bass guitars are unreal.
You can get one, with a eq for plugging in, that actually has a tube inside it!

yep the TAN15c Tak acoustic is on sale at MF for 1599.99
and just so you know, the Takamine name is pronounced tak-a-meenie, not tak-a-miyne - ( I was just scolded by my friend who owns one )
it is a 12au7 not a 12ax7 and uses 4 AAA batteries that they claim last for 24 hours worth of playing time............
and just to put this back on topic, HERE'S a weird Jackson bass that never made it to the "popular" catagory:
( MARTIN KNOWS WHAT THIS IS ) and at 4.5lbs the name of the model matches the weight.

Oh wow I forgot how cool the headstock is on that Jackson lightweight. That's rad.
That's insane...a tube preamp on a guitar. I just can't imagine it...
Would there be enough temperature coming from that tube to harm the guitar, even? "Let's start a mini lightning storm in a bottle in a huge, hollow piece of kindling!"

Not in the slightest, they put them in pedals all the time.

Oh, go eat something already!
A tube that runs on batteries?
That's a new one on me. From my being an amateur radio operator since 1979, I learned a lot about tubes and tube theory. And back in those days, it was a given that you needed a lot of voltage to drive a tube. They must have come a long way with the technology since those days!

^ If I had to guess, its probably some tube simulation thing and not an actual tube.

79 ERIC? in 79 i was still into c.b. radios and linear amps modified illegally by me. hell Eric, I had a Phantom1000 12 tube 10 meter amp modded to run on the 11 meter cb band...between that and my sears roadtalker, D104, antennaSpecialists superscanner antenna, and my Avanti moonraker-4 i talked skip a whole lot---
I STILL HAVE THAT roadtalker and the d104
TYPICAL PREAMP TUBES: the amount of signal gain from in to out is so small in amperage on all the mid voltage grids that are used ( some tubes do not use all pins of the tube on purpose and even uses the input right off the filement ) the heater filiment@12volts (remember---small = no amperage draw), and the plate voltage which needs to be quite a few volts that is true HOWEVER....PERFECT EXAMPLE:
on all pagers in the 80-90's that had backlit lcd screens for the text pagers, they used a highvoltage strip, just like a laptop uses it on a massive scale. Pagers that used that screen had a highvoltage of 85 volts, and the coil on the board that controlled it was the same diameter as a pencil eraser.
a 12ax7's filament ( heater ) amperage is so small being used in the manner it is, ya AA batteries would power it and they get about as warm as our almost 100 degree bodyheat.
you typically see preamp tubes encased in those twist and turn metal covers in any amp that has any value?...those are not for heat, those are for RF shielding only....
LESSON OVER -- and now to totally derail this thread again since I'm showing some old old old GEAR pics, here's one from 1988 in my stage gear as we were loading up the last of the stuff for a show from my house I had back then... yep 22 years ( sigh )

naw it's a Plush 100 watt 4 tuber I still have it but it don't work anymore and the bass on top of it is this one, my first bass the matching cab is out of the picture, the amp is resting on my radioshack stereo speaker, which i still have 15"3ways that still sound good ...

we shud have a special place here on bass trem fan, for that pic of that charvelle .... just the dual kahlers and all. very decadent!
i think this bass / guitar is so interesting because most double necks i've seen have the strings for the two instruments parallel. this ones arent. neat.

It makes me think of something that would come out of the mind of Ron Jarzombek, the incredible, technical Texan shredhead...
His CD with Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse and Charlie Zeleny is out of this world.

Ah-HA! So you were one of those bootleggin' CB'ers, eh Mike?
That Roadtalker is quite the museum piece! I had a later model Roadtalker that had been peaked, but it was the more compact, mobile version. And at any rate, my interest in CB has always been limited since becoming a ham, and this was partially due to my Dad becoming a ham himself after having been a CB'er for a while. We both got tired of fighting for channel space, and being limited by power restrictions. It was like, we could either stay CB'ers and only be able to legally used 5 watts AM & 12 watts SSB while fighting through a dogpile of other users that consist of a lot of loudmouthed and vulgar arseheads....OR....we could get our ham tickets, be able to legally use 1500 watts, have several bands and several thousand kilos of bandwidth to talk in, and be able to talk to people around the world with ease that are more civilized AND have the chance to assist those in need during emergencies.
My Dad made it to his Advanced license, and he was WA6TQU. I got my General class license in 1980, and I am KA6JFC.
