yes gang, another 20 year old song that NOBODY else does a bass cover on youtube with...
see what boredom with a 20 spare minutes before bed late night to jam brings.....
they might as well have called their band living colored --oops did I say that?
watch the end, I did an ooopsie, and just left it in there.

Yeah I checked it out yesterday. Haven't heard anything by LC for a long time.

thanks Martin, ya I'm still jamming, but since work has been killing me for the past couple weeks, it seems like I can go down to jam at 9pm, and then I'm so beat, I just noodle. Last night I just did the jam, and I totally forgot about the ending, but --eh...you'll have that when time is short, and I didn't want to re-do it mistakeless and waste another 1/2 hour of "sleep-time" trying to get it down perfectly

thanks MB, the black kahlered bass is the only one that sounds that way. new strings, shaved neck backside, action so low I cant see a gap and tuned to DGCF make it "clanky", but it's part of the aura of that thing. I may have said it before, but in all the "similar" models I have NONE of them sound the same to each other. One of these days I'll move the strap pin to the plate like I have been doing to the other ones, and call it a day.......

HOLY S***!!! I'm learning that song right now! Such a great song, and a really challenging song. You pulled it off, though. Congrats!

The only thing we have to fear is...Mike playing while sleep-deprived!
Only kidding you, Bro! Great job, as always! And that tone is only made better by the clankiness of the bass. Personally, I think such things lend a lot of character, and I love it when a bass tone stands out like that!

Agreed. And when you run it right through a mixer like that, I think the bass's flavor can really pop out.

Kugel, I actually tried to play it in EADG, but using DGCF and having the "open" G, was MUCH simpler!!!!!!! Good luck in figuring out the little middle parts in there with the off-time runs. It is not that hard, and has 2 very distinctive patterns that you can hear really easily ( if your trying to pick it up by ear ), but honestly, don't struggle with EADG, tune to DGCF, and use the open G.
( I have NO clue how he tunes since all the videos on youtube are musicvideos, and no way to tell )
and Eric, ya sleep deprived, quite a bit wasted, and with the typical WWE 25 minute timelimit to pull it off, I thought the end was just too funny to re-do it, so I left it in there for a little "comedy"
What is funny is our drummer saw the video, and ugh...now he wants to do that song as part of our setlist so.......you never know what tune "WAS" popular, and will be brought back from the wayback machine into today's mainsteam bar gigs

I forgot something Kugel and I'll just add another post.
some people know, but the general public certainly has no clue, but for various reasons there is a distinct advantage to having the G string on top.
the others are important, but the most important reason is I can hold on to the G string for a thumb pivot point, and since the majority of the time we play the E and A and D strings, it is never in the way, and I don't have to move my hand. you folks hold onto the pickup edge, thumbrest, floating, but you folks just cant rest your finger/thumb on the E string since it is being used constantly.
doing descending and ascending runs without the "where to plant my hand" being a factor, makes it just that much easier.
next time your checking out one of the vids, look carefully how i wrap my thumb around the G string ( and I do mean wrap around it ) to hold my hand in place.
all my basses have fingermarks in that same place under the G string side of the pickups which is kinda funny since everyone else wears marks in a different spot.
enjoy your day folks and look here soon, as more videos are on the way this weekend hopefully

Interesting about your left hand technique. I took notes from Harris, Entwistle, and Sheehan and wound up with very few muting problems doing the ubiquitous "floater" thumb. Knew all those hours drooling over Who concert footage would pay off

it is ever so apparent when I jump on the lefty bass, and have to remember NOT to hold onto the E string.

is his better or worse? no.. just different and without feeling really lame, but he's at least attempting it... I would love to tel that guy to retune his bass to DGCF or anything else and try it ---
NO I'm not gonna start trouble!!

family guy sarcasm? ok.
Here's one that is GREAT..
I would post a hate comment on it but I wont embarrass Martin cause this is his secret 15 year old European lover he met while he was there last year.
"I play by ear so don't ask me for tabs or anything. I'm 15 years old btw, just so you know.. "

No, no...you have it all wrong, Mike. She clearly states that she's been playing for two years. Musta been the year before that, then
Well, she definitely has good taste...looks like I might have to hook up with her.

Hey now! Not bad! She's well on her way!
And look closely. She's playing a higher end Yamaha BB bass. I think this one might have been the BB1200.

It's very similar to the bass that Michael Anthony of Van Halen played during the Women And Children First tour in 1980, and again during the Fair Warning tour in 1981.
Speaking of, here is a video that some of you might recognize, as it was on MTV back in the early 80's. This is Van Halen performing live during the Women And Children First tour at Oakland Coliseum, Oakland CA back in 1980. Michael is playing the very bass I'm referring to:
Seeing this video reminds me all over again why I spent so many years as an extremely fervent, diehard Van Halen fan, as they were clearly at the top of their game back in those days. I still get chills hearing Eddie's solo!
Man...I'll tell you guys...sometimes I really miss the 80's!

Eric, I STILL LIVE in the 80's fantasyworld everytime I'm asleep dreaming about the fun I had back then...
The 80's are still very much alive as long as there are people alive to talk about it.
( and play music from that era )

So one day in the not-too-distant future, we'll all be sitting around together at the Old Folks Home For Bass Players, all in our wheelchairs and diapers, teeth missing, minds going, with our bottles of Ensure going "Ha! Remember back before there were bass tremolos? Those were some dark days!"
