flashback 3.5 years doing this:
To this CLASSIC dinner music - the last gig our old singer did with us on Mar10th:
And our first gig last week with our new singer -- ( right place right time ) He was from another group here in the city we all know of and pretty much did the same stuff we do. Their band broke up, so we told the other singer bye-bye. No audition needed because we all knew how he sang already.
. a little rough around the edges while we get used to him and he gets used to us, but a BIG improvement to help the 2012 TAX-FREE cash

That's quite a comparative there, Mike.
That look you shot back at the camera in the beginning of the War Pigs video totally cracked me up!

yep, I went from cool metal to cool uh, uh, well dinner music..hehehe Around here, dinner music pays so damn well, like any good musician, I adapted and changed for the money since the love of metal was getting me nowhere.
HOWEVER, I still can jam metal in the basement to "remember" the past.
here's another "dinner" classic we also do
they call this place the Iceoplex because there is a hockey arena downstairs
so I say "sadly", but if I was still playing in the other band, I wouldn't be here...lol

war pigs is officially the goof around and audition song. yeah, that cracked me up too ... i dug the lyrics. i just auditioned singing war pigs a few weeks ago. i didnt get the job because i knocked those old guys back. i dont think they were expecting someone to audition that could actually sing. they wanted to play dead and allman bros tunes and i was like ... eh ... can we do some rush, dead weather, apc and some more sabbath!
two things to consider mike. are you having fun doing it? and. do you enjoy making the loot?
i would enjoy the loot, but i wouldnt enjoy the music. even tho i joined the drones project, i dont think its heading anywhere i want to go and i think i'm gonna move on soon. if the situation is right, i think its time for me to start building a band again for what i want it to be. i have so much 40wattsun material that never got written or recorded, nor have i found a guitarist and drummer that can work in that situation ... a bassist that writes.
i will say that i think its cool that even tho you are playing "dinner music", at least you are playing it with your own style mike. ide rather hear that than the original "Sweet home".

when the fun stops, I'm done.
from the one last month and the 3 gigs just this month providing I make at least 70 bucks on Sat night coming up which should be more because this place is a good venue, i'll have 500 tax-free to play with.
I already bought a Behrinver V-amp pro to replace my gainiac+washburn effects ( didnt get it yet ), a new rack to toss all my stuff in because the existing one is an "amp" rack and very deep and I am honestly trying to put 200 each month away for a down payment on a new car next year just using the band money.
my title on the thread is just because 5 years ago if someone asked me to join a dinner band I would have said no, regardless of the cash. around here there is way more of a market for "quieter" bands to get into more places.

Glad you're having a good time and making some extra cash. For fun, try playing War Pigs between Play that Funky Music and Sweet Home Alabama at your next gig. ;-)

I would do it SLY but I think the band would frown upon it...lol this year ( actually the last 6 months ), has been a turning point. Lighter music, lighter gear. The mackie 36lb amp is gone, replaced with a crown XLS1500 Drivecore 8lb amp. the 8 space rack was replaced with a 6 space effect rack ( not as deep and lighter ) The super light 1x15 Eric sold me sits at home most of the time now. ( our drummer loves that g-damn 4x10 sound sitting next to him so I have to bring it )
They are very helpful in carrying my gear to the car at the end of the night, so I am grateful still.

+1 i feel like i'm the only musician who does this ... so i stopped doing it. it just seems like something bandmates should do. thats cool.
recently getting the guitar, i feel like i need to go out and get the huge mesa or orange 4X12 100W tube rig (ok, i know thats overkill, but i'm just saying) but it seems the trend right now is 5W to 15W a-b switching in a 112 combo for guitarists. seems kinda whimpy to me. guitarists also feel like the combo deal is ideal across the board, including for bass too ... no thanks. been there and tried that. its actually heavier and i prefer the sound of the big deep heavy cabinets ... neo speakers make the load in easier. i'm still using the 210 / 115 with the carvin head and it sounds great to me!

oh mike the guitarplayer in this band does have the heavy gear like most, but in the small places he just brings his line6 rack-pre and plays out of the PA. Monitors have no problem with guitar but bass...meh- or I would just bring the same everywhere. ( that and the fact that the drummer loves my clanky tone thru the aluminum coned hartke )
this place we are playing Sat night is a 3 level club with bands on each floor, we got the 3rd floor because it has the nicest dance area but yuk 3 flights of nice wide stairs as they lost their permit and inspection on the freight elevator this month so it is off limits. Our drummer is bringing his lightweight electric roland kit out of my basement so he dont have to lug the heavy set and the bar provides all the PA gear.
however as long as they continue to help, it's all good. I do participate in helping with all the PA gear load-in and setup, but at the end they do it all, because me being up past 10pm is WAY past my bedtime.
I actually LIKE being old...all the morally correct youngsters seem to feel we are all geriactric invalids and help when they can...

So many truths here(helping bandmates with gear, getting help with your gear because you're "older", styles vs. pay vs. playing more, etc).
PS: Even dinner music can have kahler used in some places if your tone is "correct"/fits.

I never liked the idea of me being in a "coffee shop" band, but times and things change....
of course ther is always the get drunk and jam-jam's that I still love to do. I posted a couple vids in this thread... "carry on wayward son live with some friends ( uh oh )"
