mike's gonna have the pointiest bass of them all.
this is an exported jpeg from a working vector ruff template i made up from photos of that takamine bass and some jackson necks i looked at. the body vector would require some smoothing to make a template, its just straight lines between points, but its good enuff for a visual mark up.
somethin kinda like this ???????
yes, i dropped an image of a kahler trem on there (why not?). we'll get to particulars like what bridge, knobs, pots, pickups, electronic options, neckplate, and stuff later. i used carvin MM pickups on the ironbird and wonder why i never used them before ... they are awesome! i just ordered GFS MM's for the v440 ... we'll see if they are as good (for half the price!). maybe drop a ming's in there if we wanna wait a month to get it from beijing. whatever ... custom bass, its entirely up to you.
kahlers take up more real estate, forward and back. i had to move the rear split p forward about 1/2". i'de like to see someone tell the difference in tone in a blind taste test.
ooooh, and headstock logo. amimbari something or another?
i'll also make one up with the crackle finish product that i found and post it. i'll make what you want, but i just believe if your gonna have something cool that is a custom replica, why have it exactly as it came from the factory (even tho there were only what ... 400 - 600 of them made?). how custom is that? if your gonna be the only guy who has one, that would make it truly, the only one. ........like my palhen blue ironbird.
so, i got all the files. we'll figure out some time to start shipping parts around, ordering parts, ordering wood and start production. depending on all that and whatever else comes up at the time (it usually does) taken into consideration, iddid probably take me 3 months to turn it around once i got everything ... tops.

Very cool. I think I would do a P & another type of Pickup for the bridge position.

i cant stand that big ole honkin white nut on there. the bass is black, the hardware is black, accents are red. how is white supposed to work out in there??? might as well put gold tuners and a chrome bridge on it.
eh.

since the damn thing is mahogany, i'm sure the large head would balance it out, but the possible lefty would be ash or whatever so the smaller jacksonhead would not be a factor. and ya even the pic of Vincents is a white nut.

anyway, I am gonna try to learn to play 2 judas priest songs righthanded in a month because i'm gonna use it if possible for picture taking purposes.....

Mike, if anyone is ambidextrous like that its you.
Do, Headin out to the highway. The whole song is tonic and 5 other notes. Cool tune.
Yeah, I was thinking alder or ash for weight and keep the cost down. Its gonna already be an upcharge for an oversized piece.

the band already does livin after midnight into u gotta nother thing comin as 1 song to make it one long JP jam.
if it was that important, i would practice it but it IS VERY hard to play that way coach unless it was something super simple.
I'm gonna have a hell of a time finding a case that aint gonna cost me n arm+leg for the size. This unit has been with the seller since 1992, so im not gonna start moving it around unless it's protected

I didnt even think of that. Custom cases are too expensive and too hard to find for rare basses like ironbirds, explorers and custom shapes. Gigbags suck.
Ill start looking into materials for building one. Stumac has hinges and locks. Tolex, shag felt, thin mdf and foam .... in like flyn.

I hated the universal case for my Tbird for that very reason. It used to slap around in there worse than Wooten banging his strings.
found a flightcase..ya the foam is not what it used to be but some cutting and re-gluing of the fabric later.....snug as a bug in a rug for life.

i figured its that easy ... just wasnt sure of the best material to use. certain polys and foam rubbers eat right thru guitar finishes. harsh colors like red and orange will stain the lacquer.

years ago I had a guy hook me up with a case for my Randall guitar amp...he did a super nice job, but WHAT was he thinking...the case weighs more than the damn amp. the damn amp in the case weighs more than my 8 space rack filled with my bass stuff.

I never saw anything like that before. meaning they just didnt use a standard whatever 80's bridge that was around it looks like someones proprietary design.
well I'm home and ya it plays alright out of the box. the intonation is a lil off and the gold colored strings are 20 years old cause the seller said he bought it in 92 messed around for a year in a band that needed the look then hung it on his wall.
I'll jam a video of it tomorrow or something playing with the knobs so you can hear what it sounds like

tonight when I have the time I'll mess with it. Too bad it's not a standard 5 screw or I would just toss an extra Jackson bridge on it.

well I can only say that "out of the box", this guy had it setup perfect. super low buzzy fret typical action if I play harder than a superlight pluck, but no dead frets.
it does NOT sound like anything I have had before....ever. I wore it briefly righthanded to laugh at the neckdive....
uh, what neckdive? It is slightly lighter than my Charvel and even though that head looks huge which it is, someone did their homework making it out of Mahogany wings.. I assume it's a maple center and a true NT as the backside of the neck where it attaches looks one piece for sure.
now remember I have no clue who made the pickups or strings but wow..I'll probably do a A/B video using the same rig settings from this to my Charvel and let you all be the judges. I'm not changing them just because the silk at the top is all shredded.
god if I was a 20 something in some goth-metal band this would be the perfect tool. ( and if it was a lefty )

overall, is it real heavy?

nope. it is noticeably less than the kahlered charvel. I'll weigh it and see what we get but all I have at home is a digi bathroom scale and it may not be good enough to tell. maybe i'll bring our postal scale home this weekend. since it is sitting in the living room for now, I'll throw a tape measure on it and give you some dimensions.
if my charvel weighs 11 it weighs 9-10 for sure.

oh ... i got its dimensions already. if i take some jpegs and scale them to fall on a standard 34" bass scale without changing its proportional ratio, then all the other measurements fall into place. this is how i made that graphic, and the template already. all that i dont know is what the pocket dimensions will be and where it will be on the body.
as far as weight is concerned, it comes down to subtracting the weight of the jackson neck from the weight of the whole right handed bass ... this will tell us roughly how much the body should weight so it will be as balanced.
or tweek it so that it is better balanced.

paint. my previous post with the close up is a good example of the whole thing. very smooth not "joined" or losing the middle stripe gap in the corners.
I have to get past the weird shape, and remember that Takamine makes some of the finest acoustics and always did.

oh ya the honeymoon had just started. I still would like to know who made that goofy bridge for it. The 1 screw idea to raise the saddles is smart compared to the 2 allen screw versions everyone uses..kinda like the kahler design to lift the strings.

just when I though Takamine only made a couple of bass units in solid body in the 80's a guy on the JCF just found and bought this unit: Too bad it is not black and red or I would ask him to sell it to me for the novelty. He wants my old Randall RH150, so a trade may be in the future but he has not replied yet.
