I Googled your question Bobo, and I got this from Wikianswers:
"According to my research and personal experience, both alder and agathis are considered soft woods, but I believe alder is the harder of the two. But wood densities can vary greatly. Agathis is in the pine family, so it would stand to reason that it's soft. The alder wood guitar bodies that I own don't seem that soft to me! Hope that helps."
Since I have dealt with both alder and agathis bodies, my own experience leads me to believe the same things.

Why do you ask? I believe Ibanez makes some a lot of bodies out of agathis...possibly BC Rich as well.

Agathis is very soft compared to alder, having routed, and chiseled into both, in my experience, agathis is closer to basswood in hardness, alder just counts as a softwood, being(I suppose) one of the hardest softwoods.
