Mr. Mark as I know him (yes I know him personally... kinda, I've met him and taken a lesson from him) and I was watching the old Spin Doctors videos and some of them he has a jazz style bass with a black trem. WHat is the bass and trem?

Excellent call, T! Mark White is severely underated for his bass playing abilities, and I always thought the Spin Doctors were a talented group.
I just sent Mark a message asking him about his bass and trem. I'll let you know what I find out. But I think we can make educated guesses from the following pictures. This bass looks like it could be an Ibanez with a Kahler:
This bass looks like a Fender, also with a Kahler:
It looks like Mark has fitted his trem arms with some sort of black tip, and I've seen other players do this to their trem arms before.
By the way Kiddies, look closely at the Kahlers, especially on the Fender. Notice the countersinking?

more lefty players huh?
and I only noticed that countersink AFTER you said it. I first noticed the bar was in the opposite hole between both pics....

Very cool!
Mark now plays a rasta style musicman stingray (looks just like the atk). Next I see him I'll ask about the atk, jazzes, and the trems.

Oh and another thing I see when I see him play up close.
He slaps but his thumb never gets 2 inches away from the strings. He has an amazing tone and plays really really fast... we should all learn from him!
I'm not going to ask him about me getting a trem cause last time I took a lesson he treated me like I had just started. Most likely because of my age and not seeing me actually seeing me play. I prolly will but later... I'm afraid he slam it down and tell me to focus on my playing (which I prolly should haha)

I like the Ibanez Roadster tuners on that ATK. Those are some weird mods.
A countersunk trem...a countersunk trem...my kingdom for a countersunk trem!

Well I meant like I didn't get any time to show off/mess around to show him where I was in my playing.
And Dark... you've seen me be a complete failure, which I always am. Actually I am going to get a vid of me playing another Hendrix tune with my tapewounds before I have to send em off. I'm trading J my tapes for his chromes.

Gun!!! You have to got to be kidding!! You better stop typing on here so much and get back to practicing. Age has nothing to do with it, I already know a 15 year old that kicks *** on the bass. PRACTICE!!!!

I was just teaching him a month ago and he had to drop out again. I keep telling him he needs to practice more. It's like a no brainer. He's a funny little kid.

Man you have the strings upside down, I knew a couple of guys like that, I never got a chance to play like that because my friend who was with me when I got my first bass instantly changed the strings around.
Here's my pink jazz bass with a Kahler, It's my new main bass, I don't know what I was thinking when I was using that ATK all this time.

ya I came from the speedmetal era
Man Kidal was my hero, because he was a Malmsteen clone and did songs which I loved, but did it inverted. then I discovered Jeff Schmidt and Jim Haslip and said nope, I'm not changing.
although now a days I can play normal almost as good..eh I don't on stage because I'm too used to the patterns going UP the strings, not down.
and you must have seen something in here to say that, or over on talkbass in one of the jackson or charvel threads that all my posts are mostly concentrated in.

I sat in with a band in Singapore and the bass player had a six string righty bass and that was a nightmare to play upside down, I'm not used to the B string and it was righty, but somehow I got through it. Nowadays I can almost play upside down, but mostly only blues and a few Spin Doctor tunes.

well this board has lots of people who have Kahlers/Hipshots, and some of the most bizarre factory trems I ever saw. I agree there are just some units you can't flip and play because of the cutaway or horns or knobs.

I really enjoyed the video. I was not familiar with your playing. It was very cool & unique. I have never seen someone use a Kahler with funk, although I saw/read that Victor Wooten has one (never seen him use it though).
Thanks for stopping by.

A better question to ask is have you discovered any special techniques you use with your Kahler?

Very cool video! Love the way you use the double thumbing, plucking and strumming. I used to listen to one of the SD's live albums with a friend and always loved the bass playing without knowing who was playing. Nice to virtually meet you!
