I have been using the Big D Varitone for a while and have enjoyed the effect it has on your bass-

It's a series of capacitors on a rotary dial

The good-
It shapes your tone in dramatic ways
Its passive, so it is pretty quite once set

The bad-

Big volume drops between settings
Noise when switching between settings
Physically large-you need a deep body.

You can use a push pull bypass

It sounds like a good idea to me--instead of mangling the sound with a tone knob (most of the sounds between 10 and 0 don't work for me), use different capacitors...I like it, but most of the time, I use my basses/amps on just one setting and I don't switch around a lot.

So, I love the idea, but how well would one work for a one trick pony like me? Often things like that tend to be "jack of all trades, master of none". However, that push/pull bypass sounds like a great idea. I might have to just give one a try...

The thing I like is its juast another tool in the bag and as long as you have the push pull bypass, its like a kahler in that it can be used when wanted without getting in the way.

Yeah I like your thinking, man. Wink

It would be really cool to have a bass with a pair of RG Pitbulls and a varitone...it would feel very Gibsony.
