been out of work for a while now. i liked the last job but i jumped on a sinking ship.

wanted to get out of the graphic arts trade ... and this job popped up. they really want my mechanical skills.

so i went on the interview not knowing what to expect. the shop looks like any other shop. the office doubles as a showroom ... major hardware! whoah!

government military and state and local law enforcement contracts = job security. i was told that there is actually a shortage of product in this market.

cheggidoot .......

I don't know Mike. I'am a kind of pacifist guy (is this good english for peace loving?), and not really into firearms. But as with everything I think the rule goes:
If it's high quallity and for a fair price it will sell.

As a person with a internatinal view I would say: If in america the need (or the feeling for necesity) for high quallity firearms persists (and iI think it will) and this company can deliver them (wich you'll have to figure out) then you'll have a high demand for such jobs.

not my collection, my friends. but a non-USA person would relate it to yet another example of the "american cowboy" attitude.

Cowboy, schmowboy. While impressive if someone is a collector, most americans to me seem too stupid to own the responsibility of one of those. My understanding is there are truely only about 300 real cowboys.

ya...all it takes is some numbnutz to fall asleep smoking a harmless cigarette and they can burn down a whole building and kill 50 people.
All it takes is some numbnutz to go whacko and start shooting randomly and kill 50 people.

I am in FULL agreement that it is not the "item" that kills, but the user regardless of what that item is that can be used for good or evil.

plus in our world now a days with Afganistan/Taliban/Pakistan/Iran/Sudan wherever fighting till hell freezes over and how this country is dealing with our own gun laws and faults in the system, millions of people live their lives never wanting or owning or getting involved with a gun, some people can't live till their 18 without shooting someone or being killed by one.

As a European guy I can say:

It DOES seem weird to many people here that you can obtain a gun quite easily in America.

But in my honest nuanced oppinion that's just because I grew up in some other place. To someone from the amazone a Tv might seem weird. To someone in Africa tap water might seem weird.

I am from Holland, we have legalised drugs (only pod) and prostitution, Probably seems weird to many people out there in America (specially more conservative people (really no offense meant by this!)).

I think it is important to look at it in a sane scientific way.
Legalised prostitution offers possibilities to people who might otherwise turn to rape among others, so I agree with it *** long as the women are in it voluntarily.
In Holland the percentage of drug overdoses is among the lowest in the world, perhaps because of open communication about risks and possibility to experiment in a safer environment? I don't know! But for me it's like this: tried pod, didn't like it that much, rather have a beer. So... even though it is commonly available to me I won't use it.

Same with guns. If you don't dig it don't get them. I am pro right to protect onesself, especially in a home environment, so I do inderstand.

People just need to look at such stuff with a open mind and no prejudice. And get their facts straight! Not like this:

Rick Santorum about euthanasia

Once again, no offense against Rick Santorum or republicans or conservatives in general.

Just my point is:
Keep a open mind!
Look at the facts (and get them straight).
Take a stand on your point of choise.

By the way don't take to serious what the woman says in the video, we are not mad, and it is not a big point, most of us just think this is ignorant.

What is the most anoying to me: People who can't handle responsibility and because of that undermine the freedom of the people who can handle responsibility. With guns (killers/shooting accidents), drugs (overdose), cars (unsafe driving/accidents), it goes for pretty much everything.

So once again: Guns, not my cup of tea, but don't keep yourselves from them if you like them.

Man that became way longer that I expected. Shocked

BTW There are just as ignorant politicians in Holland, look at this:

Dutch politician Geert Wilders

I am ashamed of such a guy representing my country calling other peoples culture RETARDED!

As I said, people need to get their facts straight. I'm sorry Mike. I didn't and don't know the exact regulation in both America and Holland about gun ownership. I just expect very strongly that it is easier to obtain a gun in your home in America then in Holland.

I do know for a fact that you can't buy guns in Holland for in your home. Only for use in the shooting range, and you have to be a member of a shooting club and always keep gun and bullets seperate. You can't take your gun home though. You even get assessed psychologically.
Recently in Holland discussion fired up because some flipped out kid who had all these things secretly took his gun with him and killed some people in a mall. They said the psychological evaluation wasn't strong enough. I say there is always some nutjob who screws up what is just a nice hobby for regular people who do their best to keep things safe.

While I dont think the gun regulations you speak of are completely horrible ideas, we're talking about implimenting a system like that in america? Ha! Our government doesnt make laws based on right or wrong. Laws are based on political agendas, re elections and practicality of implimentation.

Marijuana is illegal in this country. Its pretty easy to get that. Not that our jails are filled with marijuana criminals, they arent, but there are many probation, parolees who test positive and have to go back and serve the rest of their sentence. In recent years, this has been overlooked and the law not enforced. So is it illegal or not?

Our government cant practicly establish or regulate healthcare, or the housing market.

I think in america, more than anywhere else, if someone really wants something, they will get it.

This job, I dont think these are the issues tho. Sales to the general public are just too much tedium regulation for so few dollars ... not to mention, we dont make guns, we make parts and accessories. Most gun owners wouldnt contact us directly, but they could. We mostly work with other manufacturers who supply US armed forces and law enforcement agencies. Technicly, the only time we have any interaction with a gun is in sales and development. Otherwise, the parts im manufacturing are just hunks of metal and springs that could go on anything ........

Like a bass guitar.

In my oppinion they aren't horrible ideas, they are great ideas. But as you said, rules must be made for people, most people, not for aganda's and reelections (I see that happen in Holland a lot) or for or against select groups (nutjobs who screw up for the rest. Democratie is for the biggest group, not against the smallest. But you should watch the video of the dutch politician, then you know what I mean. He tries to get social cohesion (which I love) through socially expelling a other group as black sheep (which I hate).

As the son of a cop, I used to be an avid shooter. Im glad I stopped before my legal problems and tuff times in my life, or perhaps my legal problems coulda been much worse, or god forbid, hurt someone.

Perhaps its time to educate and retrain myself.

I believe education would do more and save more lives than any control laws.

i would wonder, since guns have become such an engrained part of our society because of the news feed and entertainment industries, if there was a mandatory course in high schools, or even just a course offered in military or ROTC, that there would be less accidental and intentional shootings. when we see it, shootings on the news are fanaticised by the media because, lets face it, the news media wants ratings and because, secondly, hollywood glamorizes firearms. i really dont think many people want to do to someone else what a firearm does ... but because they think it is what they see on t.v. their judgement is clouded. once they do it and find out for real ... its too late. someone being shot is not glamourous and dramatic, the victim lying on the ground giving a speech of reichousness or vindication ... its really disgusting with the round having caused the destruction of human life and their human body.

again, i used to be a pretty good shot. i had gone deer hunting several times ... right up untill i shot a buck. not something i'm all gung ho about going out and doing again. it was very harsh and disgusting with blood and torn flesh ... ah, spare the details. i dont care what anyone has done to me, there isnt anything they could do that would have me believe that they deserve that short of them threatening to take my own life.

so changing the perspective from glamorizing the power of a firearm to teaching the respect a firearm deserves is key.

Socrates said: all sin is a consequence of lack of knowledge

Don't agree with the ALL, but education sure is a great way to start for sure!

(Don't mind my two times translated very flawd version of Socrates but it covers his point I think)

back in the 70's and early 80's when I was still a kid ( wow so long ago )....anyway, we used to freely make pipe bombs and buy cans of black power as freely as buying a soda provided the "buyer" was over 21 and had a valid license. Hell when I was a under-teen I used to love putting on a lot of protective gear, and throwing cement blocks on whole boxes of 96 rolls of caps just to feel the bang and shrapnel hitting me.

although those days are long gone ESPECIALLY after the terrorist stuff in 2001, MAN we blew up quite a lot of "non-vandalistinc" things

Nice that you had such a greaat youth with such stuff.

I feel that since some people will try and keep doing stuff like that banning stuff isn't necessarily a good thing.
Once everyone around here was toying with calciumcarbide, it was a tradition. Nowadays people go and play around with crofty bombs, way more unstable.

I was looking around and noticed that ammoniumnitrate (used to be a common fertiliser) is no longer available. (Because it is the main substance of choice for terrorists to make a IED namefully ANFO)
Since I study chemistry I thaught is might be a nice theoretical case study to find out how hard is was to make.
It took me 72 seconds af walking around on my work (in a greenhouse) to find the right chemicals.

Main point:
If you want to do something, you'll find a easy way to do it.
But... If you don't know what you're doing it might turn out more dangerous then you think.

Lot of nonsense from my side once again... sorry for that, just sharing my thaughts.

yeah, we used to blow all kindsa stuff up in the woods too. kerosine and match head tips was the most readily available accelerant ... and i'm gonna stop there before i end up on an anti terrorist list. we also learned how to fix internal combustion engines so we always had a go cart, mini bike or 50 - 100 motorcycle to play with. we learned how to use such things in a semi smart way and has served me well later in life...........

but today was a big learning day for me. i also discovered that yes, i have tons of skills this company needs.

today i did:

assembly - piece of cake
laser engraving - even changed some files to run more correct ... the set up engineer asked, "whaddaya dooin?!?" and i said yadda, yadda, yadda, and he said "carry on."
EDM CNC - very cool machine
and i even got called up the office and asked if i could fix some artwork in their literature proofs going to print ... no problem.

so yeah, i think i got a decent job.

Always last to the party as usual.

First off-Congrats to Mike!, Excellent job, hope all works out for you.

As for Jim comments, I agree with much of what you are saying. I used to be anti gun (Chicago has a pile of bodies every year from gun violence from kids), then Katrina happened and you really see that when it comes down to it, in this country, its every man for himself. I have changed.

You must also remember that people come here to this country to practice their extreme religions (puritans / quakers / etc) , the right to own as many weapons as you can. Christianity & guns are what this country is founded on. They make strange bed fellows don't they ?

I don't think thats ever going to change.
