Identify My Strings.....please!!!?? Empty
PostSubject: Identify My Strings.....please!!!??   Identify My Strings.....please!!!?? EmptySun Oct 30, 2011 11:48 am

I need some expert help.
I've acquired a trem-equipped bass with non-Rotosounds on it....but I actually like the strings on it AND the trem is set up perfectly(or almost) for the strings it came with. All I've had to do to this bass is re-attach the neck, set the pickup height correctly, remove the string tree, and play it. I would like to keep this brand and gauge of strings on this bass if at all possible. Picture below.

Can anyone identify the strings?

What is the threaded insert on the left(yellow arrow) and its function?

Thanks!!!

Probably D'Addarios. As for the purpose of that threaded thing, you'll have to wait for someone else

the old 2410 kahler had that it is a "travel" limiter I used to use mine when I didnt want the trem to actually move for the "fixed" bridge idea.

the 7410 dont have that anymore because it was stupid, and you could easily turn it too far, try to bend the notes and break it...

as to the strings where they put colored balls on it?...who knows as many companies do it.

Good call on the ID of the limiting screw, Mike. My first Kahlers had them, and I always ended up removing them.

JC, shoot....you know what? I had a set of strings with those exact same colors of ball ends, but damned if I can remember what they were. It was over a year ago. Let me think about it for a bit. scratch

Thanks bootsox!

Had the D string break at the roller two weeks ago so I put some "standard gauge" strings on....and that was a big mistake(hard to play, trem pulled forward a bit, etc.). I got a set of....um....Alice light gauge "pro"(not the 606 series) that are 45-65-80-95 and it is an amazing bass again. I've been using Roto's forever so I may have to go to the "make your own set" site and get those exact gauges in Roto. The SM 66 on the Grecos here is 40-60-80-100 and the D-G always seemed a bit weak. Not so with the "cheap" Alice set.

Keep you posted on the Roto "custom" set, expensive... yeah.

Rs66lc's or comprable curt mangans. I switched back to rotos because I got a few sets of mangans with questionable integrity (broke a bunch of a's in a matter of weeks). Spoke to curt and he said, "i know" & replaced the sets.

Ive never had any trem problems with them. I have had to polish out saddle grooves insofar as, if stainless gets nicked, the string will break. Some here use stuff like pencil graphite and teflon grease for better performance and longer life.

Gauges and feel of certian brand of string is completely personal. If you like rotos, ide recomend the curt mangans. You can order individual strings from him at a standard cost.

Personally, I like the ken smith strings the best but I can never find em, and when I have, they are so old they break so fast. Doh.

I've seen them floating around but always been afraid to get cheapo chinese stuff. If you like them though I might have to give them a try.

Only Alice stuff I've bought is a gross of picks and they're pretty decent but really it's hard to go wrong with picks

I like cheap strings, what can I say Razz
For some reason, the ebay seller I always buy em from has the 5string sets a dollar cheaper than the 4string sometimes, so this last purchase months ago I bought a 1/2 dozen 5string 45-105+130 sets.

It looks like we like the same strings!!!
Not exactly Rotosounds BUT they work, sound good, and last IME.
I ended up putting Alice strings(light) on the Fame.
They work fine and are holding up to abuse(2 months, about 18 shows) so far.

there is a thread here talking about strings where I gave Eric some sets to try since he never heard of Alice. he said the same thing you did.
I'll bet they ARE roto's just repackaged so they can be 5 bucks a pack and not 25... ( who knows ) They come in those heat sealed bags so they can sit on the shelf forever and never get affected by humidity which is a cool thing considering how many $$ strings come in those open sleeves.

I really only change them because they get sweaty and I can feel it not because of any significant tone change....
