My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard Empty
PostSubject: My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard   My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard EmptySun Nov 21, 2010 8:28 pm

Well, OK....it's not really new, as I bought it used off of eBay. But when I found it being sold, and I read the reviews, I decided to take the plunge. WOW! Not only does it have the old DOD Grunge distortion that I have always loved for bass, but it also features a rippin' pitch shifter that works really well, even on chords! It also features flange, chorus, delay/echo, phase shifting, and seven different wah-wah models. I tried it out live with the Probe last night, and it screamed!!! The pitch-shifting function made for easy replication of guitar tones that filled out the rest of the band perfectly. I scored the thing for only $55, and I could not be more pleased with how well it works. I still need to tweak the EQ section for my live rig, but even with doing so through headphones at home, it worked really well!

Now, Digitech does not claim that their pitch shifter is polyphonic, but this one seems to be. There isn't the usual fluttering of notes when playing chords that seem to plague monophonic pitch shifters. Using the pitch shifter with one octave above my bass signal, I was able to perfectly back-up Andy's lead sections by playing chords, and the rest of the band was going "WTF???"! The wah-wah section is brutal, and Doug even asked me to re-track my bass tracks with this unit once I get it dialed.

It does have a tuner, but it is really slow to respond to pitch changes, so I might still go with a separate pedal tuner at some point. Not a biggie, as it works so well at everything else.

The output volume in this thing is incredible, and it drove my power amp with no effort and tons of headroom.

Given the fact that I have had such great luck with DOD/Digitech over the years, I think I have found the right company for my effects selection. I am beyond happy with this purchase!

My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard Empty
PostSubject: Re: My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard   My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard EmptyMon Nov 22, 2010 7:25 pm

this thing looks a lot like my old boss me50-b.

the tones and effects i got out of it were great. the reason i got rid of it was the time it took to switch from effect to effect ... lag ... looking for a different term to call it other than delay. delay in switching effects ... not the effect delay. see ... confusing.

better explanation ... i'de step on the pedal to switch banks and no sound would come out till beat two. No

anyhow ... the gt10-b rectified this problem ... switching banks and turning on and off effects is instantaneous ... but the tones and effects arent as good.

you said the tone and effects are great eric, but how is this switching time issue on the digitech unit?

got synth effect? hows the tracking?

i see on the lower left ... bypass. is that true bypass?

can you move the effects in the channel? just one channel?

is there an extension loop? control with function?

did you get an owners manual with it?

... anyhow, i'm not using the warmoth now. with the switching to a preamp in the tarus, changing to a standard p bass wiring in the b-10 and just using a one channel rig, all the banked effects that i had going on for all the old 40ws stuff and all the banks that i set up for auditions, everything was just getting too confusing and sounding crappy to the point ... it was just too difficult to get a decent simple tone. i factory reset the entire unit, wiped the entire memory and am starting from scratch. i haven't done this since i bought the unit and i was surprised by how much layers of stuff with preamp modeling and eqing i had going on just over - complicating things. the factory reset took almost an hour from when i hit enter.

i would seriously consider going back to a simpler unit of a different brand, depending on how eric answers these questions. i've even considered going back to an individual pedal set up but dont think i'll do so because of price and i've been spoiled by the convenience of pulling up preset effects in a bank.

Funny you should mention that! I also used to own a Boss ME50-B, and it was actually pretty cool. But it was a bit complicated, and for some reason, my ears have never really liked the sound of Boss effects, so I ended up selling it on eBay.

madmike wrote:

Not an issue. The switching is practically instantaneous.

madmike wrote:

Sorry, no. No synth patch, but the wah section has some presets that sound really synthy. Couple this with a chorus or phasor, and it's pretty good!

madmike wrote:

Not sure. I haven't messed with the bypass function, but I will check it out when we jam again this weekend, and I'll let you know.

madmike wrote:

Do you mean, can I switch where they fall in the path? No, they are set where they are. The unit does have stereo output, and I got to hear it through headphones when I tried using chorus, delay, or the ping-pong setting.

madmike wrote:
is there an extension loop? control with function?

Nope. No extension loop. Um....sorry for being so dumb....what do you mean by control with function? You can manually change certain parameters of most of the effects with the expression pedal.

madmike wrote:
did you get an owners manual with it?

I did not, but I found it on the Digitech site, and I saved the pdf file on my desktop.

I have also wanted to go back to a multi-pedal setup, but as you pointed out, doing so is expensive. With this thing being so cheap, but having everything I would ever use, it seemed like a great deal.

The big sell for this was the Grunge distortion, and the pitch shifter. Insane, unbelievable, growly, mean, and absolutely perfect! cheers

eric ... you astound me sometimes with your thoroughness. thanx for answering my questions.

an no ... not dumb. theres probably a word or combination of words that defines what i'm talking about, but i dont know it, so i just stated it what i understand it is ..........

control with function .......

My new Digitech RP6 Pedalboard 8468-b10

see pedals ctl1 and ctl2 on the lower right side? these can be assigned to any effect, setting or external piece of equipment in the external effects loop (that i've only gotten to work either on or off. theres a way to assign a preamp boost or cut to the loop with the ctl ... but i cant figure it out) saved in any patch.

example (and i'll keep it simple) ........

bank U01 patch 1 (named erics melting distortion) has effects, preamp (metal and 2X15), od (muff fuzz), eq (to taste), chorus (just a touch), and reverb (just a touch). what i would estimate to be a pretty chrunchy tone.

the ctr 1 pedal is set in the patch to off and is assigned effect humanizer (neto boss effect). step on ctr 1 and its turned on where it was added in the chain.

the ctr 2 pedal is saved in the patch to off and has the extension loop assigned to it. in the loop is compression and eh microsynth. step on ctr 2 and now you got funky chrunchiness.

so its "control", ctr 1 and 2 ... with "function", ability to assign what it controls.

and yes ... grunge distortion. that interests me as well.

major downside to me with my boss. the muff fuzz is ok and the 3 metal preamps are ok but thats the best the distortion gets. theres 4 other types of distortion on this thing that i just dont care for. none of them have anything i could categorize as "growl" ... i want growl gosh darnit!

Thank you for the kind words, MadMike! Wink

Ah....no....you cannot assign patch combos to any specific pedal. More to the point, you assign the patch combos to certain user programs, and the corresponding pedals that control the various aspects can be switched off if you choose.

Pedal 1 is dedicated to the overdrive and distortions. Pedal 2 is for the modulation and pitch shifting functions. Pedal 3 controls the delay programs. Pedal 4 is for the reverbs. You cannot change these assignments. The only thing is that if you program a patch with different effect combinations, the pedal that controls the various patches are lit up, and they can still be switched on and off.

For example, I have user program 2 set with the Grunge distortion and the pitch shifter. When I select this user program, the pedals for the distortion and the modulation/pitch are lit up. So if I want to kill the the pitch shifter, I can simply stomp on the modulation/pitch pedal to switch it off, and hit it again to turn it back on. Basically, the pedal allows you to manually turn off certain aspects of the effects selected right in the middle of the selection.

Did I confuse you? Laughing

And yes, I cannot say enough about the DOD/Digitech Grunge distortion on bass. It might not everyone's cup of tea, but for me, it is the perfect bass distortion. I wouldn't say that it growls, but it definitely screams, and that's what I like about it. Of course, I can get my bass to growl really nicely between the Grunge distortion, and the pitch shifter. Not confused.

The boss me50b is similar. There are 2modes. One is straight and each of the pedas turns each effect on and off with the settings assigned to each and then there's memory mode where effects are stored in patches 1 - 4. In memory mode you can't turn an effect on or off in the chain ... stepping on a pedal 1 - 4, takes you to that patch.

With the Me50b, I would set up patches in memory next to each other with effects added or removed. Just a different way to get to the same place.

Yeah, I did like the ME50B quite a bit, but it just wasn't quite all the way there, if you know what I mean.

Dude! MadMike! I just went back and re-read one of your posts from yesterday. Do you really have a patch called "Eric's Melting Distortion"?

Wouldn't that be cool ... but no.

The gt10b has a patch editing mode. I can name a patch anything I want. Once I hear some recordings with your new rig, bass and digitech, I can mimic a distortin tone best I can and name it that if you like.

An update.

I cannot say enough about this pedalboard! The distortion quality is every bit as awesome as I remember it, since it is the DOD/Digitech Grunge distortion. And the pitch shifter is off the hook!!! I love the sound so much that it stays on my distortion channel all the time now! And the wah-wah pedal is so much better than I was expecting. What a nice surprise that have gambled a bit in buying it, and for it to work so well! cheers

Bummer, Bro! I watched it for a bit to see how it was going, and I reckoned after it had climbed above $70 or so that you were probably going to let it go. They do seem to show up quite a bit on eBay, so it shouldn't be too long before you get another shot at one.

LOL! Thanks Bro, but I don't know of anyone offhand who wants one at the moment. I wouldn't simply because I don't like having a bunch of tone and blend knobs onboard my bass. My EMG DC40 pickup goes right into the volume control and output jack. But if I hear of anyone wanting one, I'll let you know. Thanks! Wink
