Long time 4 stringer. In a trio and having fun but playing all covers. So here is what I did... Beside all the Classic Rock covers... we are now doing Originals!! Now I can whammy all I want. Just (haven't received it yet) got a Carvin B4 with a Hip shot Whammy and I got a lot of songs that I got down with the lyrics and chords over the top with bass lines that will require some "bombs". Never used one and if it turns out sounding ok... I am going to have some fun. Anyway, I am glad there is actually a web site that has tremelo bassists.

Welcome to BTF Cobrari! You're definitely amongst friends here!
I once owned a Carvin B4 with a Kahler on it. They make some really great basses.
Can you post some pictures of yourself and your bass? And if you have any audio or video, feel free to post those as well.
Cheers!

Id like to see some audio or video as well. I'm more of a Kahler guy myself, so I'd love to see that Hipshot in action

I'm here because of peer pressure what's a whammy? I only know of one whammy that has influenced my life:
welcome to the forum CO-BRARI ( is that the way you pronounce it )?

UPS dropped off my bass yesterday and I haven't been able to do anything else but play it. Surprised that is staying in tune (within a couple cents). The bass is tung oil and feels so sweet.
I am going to have to get tutored on the tremelo application. Got to be a way to play holding on to the whammy bar and playing without bending the notes. I typically play finger style over the top.
Right now it is more or less a novlety but once we get the eight originals structured a bit I am going to find ways to integrate the tremelo. No rules on original stuff!
Yea... to answer the last post question... it is pronounced Co-Brari. A combination of the AC Cobra and the Ferrari.
I will post pics later.

Typical fast bass playing does not really utilize a Kahler. It becomes more effective with Harmonic / Chordal & melodic parts.

I agree. When the harmonics are chimming using my thumb resting on the strings and plucking with my middle finger, down around the pickup locations, the tremelo adds to the ringing sounds. The only harmonic playing I do (I am not educated musically) is what I pulled off of a couple videos I have of Jaco Pastorius. I am learning and having some fun with it.

Cool! I also learned my pinch harmonic technique from watching Jaco in videos!

NO rules for playing with a tremolo...do what feels right. Your feeling for the action of the particular bridge that you're using is what will determine what you can do with it. Bass tremolos are so interesting because they're so few and far between. Nobody's there to tell you how to use it because not that many people know or care. It's open territory.

This. The very fact that you have a trem mounted on your bass means that you're already way off the beaten path. There's no "traditional" way to use a bass trem and no way that they're "supposed" to be used. No one will ever tell you you're using it wrong. In fact, IME, people rarely get past the "OMG! ITS A TREM! ON A BASS!" part.

Yeah, good point, Kugel. Man, I've been so long without a 7410ed bass, I'm aching to see what I can do with one that's set up right and to see if the knowledge and perspective that I've gained since I last had it "working" (if you can call mile-high action on an improperly mounted trem playable) will help me find ways to use it better in my music...

My band pratciced monday and yea... I brought "it" out. I had a blast with the guitar player bending notes together. He plays a strat with a tremelo. Oh.. I picked up the vibe that "whammy" is not a word to be used anymore. Anyway... we do Steppenwolf's Pusherman. If you know the tune then you know how cool it is for me and guitar player to both drop down together in pitch during the break.
We usually have a couple "drop ins" during our practice and sure enough everyone who came by laughed (with me) when they saw a tremelo on a bass.
The tremelo bar on the hip shot can be inserted in two positions. I play finger style over the top so I am having better functionality by playing with the trem in the top spot. It is hard to not bend notes when you don't want to. I guess it will take a lot of practice.

I get the same reaction "ooh thats weird looking" or " oh wow a trem on a bass" or "wth do you use that for on a bass for, your not playing melody lines like a guitar player"...god, the list goes on and on...
( just so you know my fixed-bridge kahler got the same silly questions ) "why is it on an angle" or "that thing looks too big for the bass"...and yep THAT list goes on and on as well.... for years i never used the bar on my black charvel, but the comparison of the OEM to the kahler bridge was so incredible of a sonic difference, I never cared. finally I had one installed on my lefty charvel and NOW...the fun begins
l guess my idea of "fun" may be different than others, but from the week of constant playing I have done with it since I got it back,
...I'm happy until the next youtube video gets posted with me actually using it.
