PostSubject: carvin ne10-4   carvin ne10-4 EmptyFri Feb 19, 2010 7:18 pm

after abusing my eminence delta 10 - b's for 3 years, with underpowered, overdriven amplification and more recently, overpowered tube driven amplification, they have finally started to go. you guys can hear it in the recordings we did 2 months ago. i couldnt figure out what that icky sound was untill 2 weeks ago ... my 10's going.

i looked at eminence again, and they just dont have the specs that i want (a tighter frequency range in a 300W speaker, 4 or 16 ohms to make a 2X10 cabinet at 8 ohms) at a decent price. bummer. i've really like the eminence tone, but the deltas have too much high end easy wattage. i've gone with higher wattage 15" LF speakers to compensate, but i've been loosing the low mids alltogether. perhaps i'll go back to the eminence when i need lower wattage speakers @ 8 ohms for a series parallel in a 4X10 cabinet and need speakers.

the higher wattage 15" speaker i went with was the carvin ne15-8. i like it, but with the eminence sucking up the high end easy watts, it sounds a little sloppy.

so thats 2 carvin products that i'm using with the bx1200 amp that i've been pretty happy with. their products are engineered to work well with their products so i figured ... lemme go all carvin.

i got these .......

very affordable. about 20 pound lighter cabinet now. the high end range thru the low is a much more balanced and smoother transition. VERY LOUD! i really like these speakers!

if your looking to redo a cabinet with new speakers, price is an issue and your looking to break away from the samson / peavey mold, i strongly recommend you give these speakers a try.

in the not too distant future, i may just decide to go all out with new carvin cabinets all around.

I could not agree more with your assessment, MadMike. I, too, have owned Carvin speakers, and I have know a few others that have also. They really are a superior product for the price. Good score! Wink

Neodymium magnets are so awesome. you should try running a bass with q-tuners through it!

yeah ... q-tuners are on the list of future products. they have gotten great reviews and are installed as an option on some pretty prestigious basses. my washburn tarus t-24 has stock jazz pickups. they are decent ... but they aint the best. i cant decide if i wanna use the single coil jazz q-tuner (i think they are like stacked humbuckers) or rout out to fit the soapbar q-tuner.

i'm not too sure about the tonal or performance advantage of neo speakers, but i do know that my cabinet is a lot lighter now!

i had to rip this cabinet apart again today. i was getting some sloppy buzz going on somewhere. i dont really give a deuce about this cabinet ... it is hartke and it is el crapo ... so i just spooged wood glue in the gaps i made with a pry and then sunk 1 1/2" drywall screws around the corners and stress points. i left it sitting unloaded next to our heating unit (about 95 degrees). came back home several hours later, dropped the speakers back in and its tight like tiger!

we played a show last night for about 100 people at RPM's rock club with another band (friends of ours) one set for us, so what was I to bring?

2x12/4x10/2x15+???
found out we knew the sound guys, there was 4 B52 subs 4 towers (2 subs/towers per side naturally)
I was just direct out into his system straight out of my wireless -- all I could hear out of my harke was the string tick on stage cause it was l.o.u.d. thru the pa.

( I used the 1b pbass with the emg. Its so cool to feel your pants moving while standing in front of a stack with thousands behind it.)

anyway my point is that my harke 4x10 is a joke even for med gigs because the stock speakers in it suck to begin with and it has no low end I'm lucky if I won't distort at 100 watts according to the meter, nowhere near close to 400 it is rated at and replacements like your example would give me a lot more headroom before I see the amp clipping in perhaps a lighter overall package.

theres only two reasons i have that hartke cabinet ... as i have a real bad history with them .....

1)my car at the time would only fit a 1 15" cab and a 2X10.

2)you can get a harke vx210 for $200 brand new. i was in sam ash because i know they have them and i told them they have no used 2X10's on the floor and i just need a cab ... not speakers (i had sheffields from a 4X10 that didnt fit in my car!) so you can make a sale by selling me this new hartke crap for $150 or make no sale at all ... they did it! the samson speakers lasted one gig till they started goin "chchhcchchchchchchchhchc", then i put the sheffields in. got 2 years outta them ... 3 years outta the eminence and now the carvin.

this cabinet is just a shell for the audio i wanted to put in it. even the shell itself is junk!

since, i've replaced the hf driver (peavey rx22 i think) and put an eminence crossover in it.

hartke has a new line of pro audio cabinets that, at a quick glance, are actually higher wattage handling ... so you dont blow them up thru a ampeg or other higher wattage head. they cost as much as bag end, mesa or agular ... but why would you want to spend that kinda money on hartke? go online and try to buy a replacement samson speaker ... it aint happenin. i think they know their stuff is not built to last but instead of providing customer service (like ability to replace a speaker) ... they expect you to just go out and buy a whole new cabinet.

i have a station wagon now and i got more room. i'de like to go all carvin cabs or mostly ... like ....

4X10 and 15" series @ 4 ohms with a 18" @ 4 ohms usnig the biamp on the carvin bx1200 for a high and low channel.

or

4X10 and 15" series @ 4 ohms hf channel with a seisemic audio 2X15 @ 4 ohms on the biamped low freq channel.

again ... cost + need and resources + quality = carvin.

that ... and i've called them. they are always willing to take the time and talk shop; offer me some options and tell me what they can and cannot do. good customer service!

and oh yeah .......

this gig tonite was horrible ....... i'll post in rants.

but the whole carvin speaker rig sounds so, so, so much better! theres a much more rounded and level sound thru the frequencies from low to high ... not just all low and high. i can hear all those subtle nuances that i do when i'm playing much better. the 10's output any harmonics much better too, as well as the high pitched octave synth stuff i do.
