PostSubject: My new band Alien Probe!   My new band Alien Probe! EmptySat Dec 12, 2009 2:57 pm

OK Guys. I figured the easiest way to do this is to add our first track recorded together as a group to my MySpace page located at: www.myspace.com/basstremolohaven . It's in my music player, and it's called Up Yours. This is only a rough mix without the vocals, but I think you'll get the idea. Tell me what you Guys think of it! Wink

PostSubject: Re: My new band Alien Probe!   My new band Alien Probe! EmptySun Dec 13, 2009 6:09 am

i like it ... being probed in that loving alien sorta way.

not that theres anything wrong with that.

a month or so ago, i was wondering why so many bassists were so hot about running 2 channels. it came up again when you were buying your new rig. you spoke about running a clean and distorted channel ... i just never knew to listen to recognize such a thing untill i've started to fiddle with it.

now ... this is a quick recording and personally ... i think the bass level is low. i understand, it is what it is, and i always think the bass level is low IN EVERYTHING ... but i can hear the separation of the wet/dry, clean/distorted channels. it sounds sweet!

the effectiveness will be noticable when the distortion is abused .... it will still have that warm bottom end boom. usually for me, on one channel, the distortion kills the warmth. the growl sounds better too.

i bought the carvin head with the crossover and bi - amp capabilities to separate the highs and lows. because of the shortcommings of the recordings and requests from the engineer to do such a thing, i'm looking at running a wet/dry similar setup with my rig ... effects on one channel and clean on the other. i'm thinking it may not be the best for a live situation (it just wont be loud enuff) but for practice and recording ... awesome. i'll have to fiddle around with it when i get the hardware for the setup and see what i come up with. it may involve just going out and getting more amps / pre amps / cabinets / and stuff.

always ... more stuff.

this will make a lot of the effects i use sound warmer, fuller, better ... others, maybe not so much. (high octave drive comes to mind as a no.)

sounds cool eric. i reall dig it.

keep us posted.

Thanks Guys! Wink

BTW BD, I just noticed your cool new avatar pic. It looks like somebody in the guitar shop got really ripped one night! Laughing And I'm not actually using my trem at all, in fact, neither is Andy. It's all just chords and squeals. Andy is using his custom built 8-stringer, with his low string tuned down to the equivalent of my A.

MadMike, you are absolutely correct in that the bass level is low, so let me qualify that by saying that this mix is not final by any means. We recorded this at our drummer Doug's home studio, and after we finished I asked him to just quickly throw something rough onto a CD for me. In fact, I might very well re-do my tracks since I have had time this weekend to fiddle with my new Behringer pre's some more, and I found both a different clean and distortion tone that I like even better than what I had in there before. Plus, Doug is still getting used to having a bass with distortion. Don't get me wrong, he loves what I do. But like over 90% of engineers out there, he had never even heard of the concept of stereo bass with distortion before this. So even he is on a new learning curve.

And I hear what you are saying about experimenting with crossovers to split out your clean signal from your dirt, but I personally have never had good luck in doing so since you are still taking one signal and dividing it into two paths. With my rig, I still have the total spectrum available to me, so I could (if I lost my mind, for example) jack up the bass freq's on my dirt channel, and remove all of the lows from my clean channel. Again, not that I would ever want to, but what I mean is that I still have the whole range on both signals at my disposal. Sure, bi-amping with a crossover works really well to split a signal into highs and lows, and thus, send each one into speakers that best compliment each signal, but this is usually for obtaining a really good hi-fi clean tone.

Mostly, I posted this just as a cheap & dirty glimpse into what we're doing. And since Andy and Doug have been jamming together for over 20 years, they literally have several albums worth of material written, so we have lots to work with that all sounds killer. The nice thing is that they are now taking my input in re-writing the material. For example, Up Yours in it's original form didn't have that slower break-down part that's roughly in B minor 3/4 of the way through the song. I wrote that part on the fly one night at Andy's studio since both Andy and Doug wanted to change it up, and couldn't think of what to do.

Listen carefully to that part, and you'll notice that when my part ascends, Andy's part descends, and then it flips. Again, my twisted idea. Cool

Oh....and would you like gloves with that probing? clown

I really like the deep, chuggy sound that Andy has going on. It sounds like he still has his distortion on full, but he just rolled back on the guitar's volume knob or something. Gives it a Meshuggah-y sub-guitar growl that I like a lot.

That's so cool that you're all open to what each other has to say without any kind of pretense. Sounds like a really comfortable and creative environment to be in. It's evident in how that track sounds--it rips!

Hahaha you guys should get your singer to come on stage first in a lab coat or something. He'll just stand there and then pull out a pair of latex gloves and as some creepy, sinister intro track is playing he puts them on--ominously--one...by...one...and looks members of the audience in the eye. PostSubject: Re: My new band Alien Probe!   My new band Alien Probe! EmptyTue Dec 15, 2009 4:08 am

ya know eric ... you struck up a serious question with my rig.

my new amp ... theres 2 ways to run the 2 power amps; crossed over or not. nice option on the carvin head if it works the way it does in the theory (in my head).

putting the effects processing post preamp on one of the power amps should give me that 2 chanel separation when its not crossed over, but i havent decided what cabinet would sound better clean and what cabinet would sound better w/ effects. i'm thinking i'm gonna process whats going to the 15". running everything clean chanel, the 2X10 sounds better ... but i gotta experiment when i get everything i need to set it up (silly tip ring sleeve jacks).

then that leads to another question ... what would it sound like with effects only on whats crossed over to the high or low end? probably pretty weird. ......... cool! again, i gotta experiment.

i gotta chek and see if i can turn the x over on and off with another pedal. more interesting versatility if i wanted it.

this new head running bi amped and having 2 8ohm cabinets (8 ohm and 8 ohm biamped, each amp running at 8 ohms only gives me like ... 270W?) has me thinking about building another cabinet at 4 ohms. i'm thinking of a 4X10 sizemic audio. i can parallel the 2 8 ohm cabs for 4 ohms on the one amp and the 4 ohm 4X10 on the other. thisll give me 2X 400W.

my rig keeps growing!

You'd probably notice a big increase in volume and headroom with that setup. More speakers, lower impedance. I say go for it!

Thanks, BigMits! And even as we jam the tune in practice, it is still evolving over time. I can foresee us re-tracking the tune soon, and making it bigger and scarier! Laughing

MadMike, probably the best answer to your questions would come from doing the experiments, and taking good notes. I have opinions about how it will all work out, but I don't want to mislead you at all, and not having your gear right in front of me, it's difficult to say just how things will turn out in trying the different combination's. I've done a lot of cross hook-up tests myself over the years, and sometimes when I was expecting one particular response, I would wind up getting something completely different. There are so many factors and variables to consider that I think it's best to just try every option available to you, and see which one works the best. Cool

"whoah! what was that!?! that was a really strange sensation ....... Shocked

oh ... it was that alien probe again ... "

rabbit

yeah ... furreal eric. i have an idea in my mind but its probably not gonna be anything like i would expect.

example .........

i been running this carvin head with the master, well, as the master volume. makes sense, right? right. tonight i hooked it up (bridged) to sit and practice and play and follow along with the show theme music and commercials like i do. when i set the level ... theres the high and low channel masters that only runs on the low when its bridged. i cut that back, cranked the master ( 8 ), and edged up the low master for my level (.75). wow. the low end cuts thru with harmonics and character without being sloppy boomey loud. i had no idea.

your right eric ... i need to spend quality alone time with to learn the ins and outs of this rig so i can get the most out of it. i'm getting the cables i need and a 600W 15" friday ... i think i'll go up to the batting tunnel saturday afternoon for a few hours and make a lot of noise!

Sweet. I'll bet that thing can really crank.

Speaking of 15s, I got a quote on a custom 2x15 cab today and I'm going to go for it. I put my Peavey cabs up on Craigslist and I already have a guy who wants both of them. I'll make $80 off of them--alright! That puts me about halfway to being able to afford the cab I want. With some Christmas/birthday money I might be able to afford it early next year.

I'm looking at an Emperor 2x15. I want something like a Sunn 2x15, but with better low end response and not all old and "vintage" (beat to crap for the last 40 years), and of course, styled to my taste and that's exactly what it'd be. I hope to get an ebony vertical bass 2x15 w/ black grille, recessed metal handles, and big top with the Emperor logo, if I can get enough money together. I'd want it to be able to handle my 400+ (300W). I don't know what impedance I want it to be, but I'll probably have it at 4 ohms. Why an Emperor 2x15? I don't know...I feel like treating myself to something nice. I'm not looking for a huge wall of speakers, but a high-quality, well-made, nice looking, loud cab that will last me a lifetime and stand out as looking and sounding professional. I've bought a lot of crappy gear and I feel like getting myself something nice for my 18th birthday. Kinda a coming of age thing. Very Happy

emperor's are muco grande.

emporor's are muco grande expensive! i looked at getting some custom cabs built ... and i just cant afford them.

they are just beautiful too.

i was at an electric horsemen show about two years ago, hanging out with my buddy ben ... he rocks! he had a new guitar rig with solid finished wood panels ... looked like oak (veneer?) ... with matching tube head with a 4X12 and 210_215 bottom cab. these things looked like solid hand crafted wood, had no labels on it and made my guttey wutz rumble (from a sg guitar set up). this set up was a monster!

i asked him (because he's been known to build his own) and he told me it was all emperor. i told him i never heard of it. then he introduced me to the guy who builds the stuff. cool! he started telling me a glutton of info about sound design specs ... i gave him the confused dog look.

if you can afford it ... i'de recomend you get your hands on emperor.

maybe someday i'll have enuff loot to. (cummon recording contract)

I was quoted $775 on a 2x15. That was better than what I was expecting. They don't do tolex, but their stains look awesome. I'll probably go with what they call "ebony" or "dark walnut".

Thanks, Mike! Wink

Actually, I think we're going to re-record the whole track again. Not because what we got is bad at all, but now that we've been jamming with the tune, we're all coming up with some different ideas for it.

Plus, I have decided that my Behringer V-Amp pro for guitar isn't quite cutting it. I mean, I really do like it, since it does so many different things well, but the distortion isn't doing it for me. It's just that I'm so used to that great sound my old DOD G7 had that I've decided to sell the V-Amp on eBay, and I am about to try and snipe a G7 that's going to end tonight. If you Guys will recall, I did buy a G7 on eBay, but it had a really bad ground hum. But I emailed the seller of the one I'm gunning for, and he assured me that it works perfectly.

So I have my V-Amp listed for a BIN of $99 with free shipping, and the G7 ends in a little less than six hours from now. Currently, it has two bids at around $23. My hope is that I can use our high-speed cable connection to jump in at the last second, and outbid the other bidders. If I win this one, then I am definitely going to re-record the track with the distortion tone that I truly want to have.

That's awesome!! Fingers crossed, dude! I hope you get that thing!

amy actually frowns on me when i get totally engrossed in the bass things that i know i want. i do get wrapped up in it and end up surfing the web for days looking for it, spend days sanding it down perfectly, soldering for hours or rushing home from work in hopes the ups or fed x guy dropped off something i been expecting.

she actually sez i'm obsessed. ok ... maybe a little bit. its led me to learn more about my instrument and end up with some really cool custom stuff i wouldnt have had otherwize ... so i see it as a good thing (as long as my rent is paid and i have gas in my car).

so ... i think its cool eric, that your determined to get what you want. if you know what you want and have been setteling with what you dont need ... dont hesitate, i say. honor yourself and get your tone right.

I know I'm obsessed, but it pays off. Knowing your sound and understanding gear that you like and don't like is incredibly important to your creative growth.

Thanks, MadMike. Cool And you know, it doesn't absolutely have to be a DOD G7. Just as long as it nails that particular sound, I could care less who makes it.

Bummer days! I lost out in the bidding on the G7. No But I am also seeing some cool devices such as the Line 6 DM4, and the Ibanez EC20 Shark. Not only do they sound killer, but they both come with noise gates. I might try one of those to see how well they work.

Part of my complaint about my V-Amp is that the distortions all sound scooped to my ears, and as I have been preaching from Day One, I need to have a really hot mid section running. That, and I am also discovering that my 1x15 cabinet isn't producing a lot of treble response. Hmmm....it's all an experiment, eh? Laughing

In fact, my SA 2x15 is capable of producing more treble response since it isn't ported. So now I am also toying with the idea of grabbing another SA 1x15 to run with my other one for my lows, and running the 2x15 for my distortion channel.

Of course (and I hate to have to keep saying this), it's economics that govern much of my gear acquisition at the moment. Once this ceases to be an issue, I'll be able to simply grab whatever will work the bet without having to fret over it.

I've never heard of the EC20 before, but I've heard great things about the Line 6 pedals from the people who have used them. The EC20 kinda makes me think of some of those Morley guitar amp modeling units that keyboardists would use for the shreddy lead tones...like on Stratovarius or Malmsteen albums or something.

Yeah I don't like that sound of distortion. Always too boomy without the mids to hold it together. There's no clarity or zang and it gets worse with chords, especially when you play closer to the neck.

What have you got in your setup now? 2x15 and 1x15s? Do you have a 4x10?

Currently, I have a 2x15 for my lows, and a 1x15 for my distortion. The speakers work well, but I am still tweaking the overall setup. Hopefully, a new preamp will fix things. Wink

And last night at Doug's studio, we laid down the foundation for a new track. I really like this one in that, not only do Andy and I do a unison tremolo divebomb together, but I also get a four-measure bass solo part! It was Andy's idea: "Dude! Do a bass solo in that part!" Laughing

Hmm yeah adding another 1x15 for the lows sounds like a good idea.

Sweet! Can't wait to hear it!

the sa 1X15 i bought unloaded and ported and put a peavey black widow in it. with just the peavey head @ 150 W and a clean channel, this set up picked up mids and highs quite well. now ... those peavey black widows are only rated @ 300W so you'de probably be better off getting something higher wattage, but that frequency range is reachable with a 15". this is why i got the 600W carvin speaker for this cabinet.

i'll post continuing reviews about the carvin speaker in my post.

with a unloaded seismic and a half decent speaker, you can get away for under $200.

Mmh those BW speakers do sound great--I heard all the sustain and punch I wanted out of my 18" Black Widows. The 10" Scorpions sucked (way too plucky on their own), but the 18s were well-balanced, maybe favoring the top end a bit and the 18s blended well with the 10s. They handled what I threw at them, but I was wary of how much power I threw at them for fear that they wouldn't be able to cope with it.

OK Gang. Some more Probe! alien

I just uploaded onto my MySpace page another song of ours called Wasted Truth. My very own darling Linda wrote the title and lyrics, however, Dave has not had a chance to record them yet. And the music is, again, going to be re-tracked at some point. My distortion tone is still in need of tweaking, and I dialed in one quick just to record the track. But for now, I think you can get the basic idea.

This particular track is fun in that, in the middle, I do a little bass solo and a unison tremolo drop with Andy. It's pretty cool, and I believe it to be a worthy follow-up to Up Yours. drunken

no jam sounds good without a good guitarplayer with no ego issues and a drummer that is capable of changes without losing the tempo Smile

I'm sure that 2010 will be the release of the AlienProbe debut album.

You said it, Mike! Very Happy I cannot tell you how awesome it is to be playing with these guys, since they are both incredible musicians with zero ego. To be honest, it still surprises me!

Our first gig is set for March 6th in Ferndale, WA. Yay!

And yes, we are working towards a genuine release sometime this year. Zakk Wylde knows what Andy's been doing, and he is waiting for us to send him some completed stuff. Where that goes, no one can say for certain. But I do think that we'll get at least some sort of high-level exposure out of it. Wink

It is! Very Happy But I am also trying to be realistic. After all, this is nothing new for me. I have been down this road numerous times, and the odds of anything truly big happening are extremely slim. So, I am trying not to get too worked up over anything just yet. None of us are, really. We're all just taking things day-by-day. You know, just focusing on what's right in front of us and whatever happens, happens. Now, this doesn't mean that we're taking our work in stride, either. Far from it, in fact. We are pouring all that we have into this thing, but we're also not going to set ourselves up for disappointment. Just keepin' it real! alien

Awright....another rough re-do. This is what we did the other night, and it still has a lot of cleaning up to do. Our goofy vocal parts, for one thing. And I still have to tighten up some of the bass parts. But for what it's worth, I wanted you Guys to hear what the addition of my new low B string has done:

http://home.comcast.net/~apstudiosx/mp3s/02%20Up%20Yours_2-21-10_m.mp3

Brutal, isn't it? Laughing

I am way beyond sold on having my low string a B now! cheers

huh ... up yours too pal! Razz

sorry ... just the philadelphia reaction style.

yes ... i really dig the new distortion channel tone. simple recording doesnt pick it up (neither does crappy computer speakers) but with the combination of fuzz distort and warm clean channel it sounds like it drops like a bomb and rumbles the grundle.

yes ... glad you like the b string. with the advent of me using a kahler and having better luck staying in tune with lighter gauge strings, i've kinda shyed away from the beefier gauges lately. it just comes down to saving a buck and having all the basses with the same gauge sets. i have always liked the top heavy bridge cable sets ... they always just rumble the grundle better.

kick butt song. i like the beginning ... it is very ... alien. rabbit

Well, I don't imagine that the focus of this band is to sound like Tony McAlpine, although he is quite awesome! I have two of his solo albums on vinyl, if you can believe that.
