For you, Buddy! Brian Patrick Carroll, otherwise known to the world as Buckethead:

For NoobOnRoad, since it was just his birthday - Buckethead unmasked! Shawn

For NoobOnRoad, since it was just his birthday - Buckethead unmasked! Plug-bbf

I dug these up off the web, and many folks viewing them weren't totally convinced that these are of the man himself. But I can assure you that this is the same guy that I was introduced to in Berkeley CA right after his gig. Wink When I saw him, he performed with Maximum Bob, who was the singer for the band Deli Creeps that Buckethead played with before going solo. The gig was really avant-garde, since it was done in a small independent art studio before a crowd of maybe 50 people, and it was only Buckethead and Maximum Bob.

As if watching burn on his guitar at such close quarters wasn't enough, he picked up a bass at one point. And let me tell you from personal experience, the man is light-years above and beyond frightening on bass!

BTW, here is the Wikipedia link about Buckethead:

Huh I remember seeing a really poor quality black and white photo of him. I would never recognize his face.

Man! Sometimes I really love the web!

From YouTube, here is a snippet from one of Buckethead's DVD's that shows him in the early 90's soundchecking. The venue? None other than a place and stage that I know like the back of my hand. San Jose CA's infamous and long-gone Cactus Club:

Do any of you recall me posting a video of myself performing with an Ozzy/Sabbath tribute band called Rhoads to Ozz? Same exact venue.

Such an amazing guitarist. I have no idea how he stays as modest as he does

I know. I think he's just a real, no bullshit person. The reason that he donned the bucket and mask in the first place was so that people would pay attention to his music rather than him.

I saw Buckethead with Les Claypool's Bucket of Bernies Brains project. He was crazy. Just amazing guitarist. Notice his long spider fingers!

I love his use of his pickup selector switch. Wonder how many he goes through?

Yeah, no kidding.

I was thinking--there aren't too man guitarists who can slap. There are even fewer guitarists who can slap a guitar in a way that I like. The way that Buckethead slaps just blows my mind. He makes it sound so good on guitar.

It was cool to meet him, but for a really long time now, I've been of the mindset that these guys are just people. Sure, they're famous, and they touch us with their music, but they're just as human as you or me. Brian/Buckethead was just a really mellow cat with NO ego whatsoever, and that's always refreshing. Yeah, the rest of us will practically gawk and go "you're so awesome!!!", but they're still just regular folks who happen to be well-known. Wink

It can actually be a little unsettling for them at times. I've never, and WILL never reach anything close to what guys like Brian has, but I remember many times when I lived in the Bay Area when other bass players would come up to me in someplace public since they recognized me....and I didn't have a clue who they were. At first, it's kind of cool. You're going "wow! They actually know who I am, and I'm a nobody!"....but then it became a little uncomfortable, since I didn't know them at all. It drove the point home that we're all still just people. It's great when someone comes up to you and wants to talk to you, and share their stories, but not so much when you're in Costco trying to wrestle an over-sized package of toilet paper into your cart! Laughing
