Nah...you gotta get spinners and 18" subs in the trunk.

That's awesome, dude! Very Happy My friend has owned two Civics and they've both been really outstanding vehicles. It's possible that I could get a Honda. Hell, you can get one used for the right price, that's for sure.

People can debate all they want to about the quality of automobiles, but of one thing I am absolutely certain. A Honda will literally run forever if you take proper care of it. There might be exceptions to this, but it's not unusual for Honda's to run for close to half a million miles.

Mhmm. They do pretty good in crashes, too. For how small their cars can be, they're incredibly safe and reliable.

was under the hood today. its built like a watch.

people dont take care of cars like i do. when i mess with something (today was the air filter) i wipe everything clean and everything clean around it. most used cars i get have caked on gunk on everything and are extremely dirty to work on. after i'm done with them ... they look like new under the hood. i have a lot of work to do.

anyway ... i was just fascinated. this car is engineered very well from a mechanics point of view. everything makes sense and is thought out as far as where its supposed to be so it can be worked on.

i really like this car!

This. My mom drives a 2003 Pilot. Other than a couple flat tires and the usual upkeep stuff, nothing has ever gone wrong with it. My aunt got a BMW small SUV thing 2 years ago, and it breaks down CONSTANTLY.

Also, I'm getting an Accord, once I get around to getting my license Rolling Eyes.

Yuppers! Seriously, Honda's will keep on going and going and going, provided they are properly taken care of. And I am a believer in creating and maintaining American jobs. But the truth is that if folks want Americans to buy only American-made automobiles, then the auto manufacturers need to get off their greedy asrses, and make cars that will last! Period!

Nice Honda, the wagons are pretty rare.

My brother worked in the American auto industry and he told me that Us companies spec their parts supliers to engineer parts to only last 4 years when the warrenty expires. It makes a lot of money in servicing.

I have a 98 mazda MPV Van that has 80,000 miles on it and have had no problems other than mantinance (brakes & a muffler thats it) It will easily last 200,000 miles.

on the american car thing.

when i pop the hood of my accord ... its sez, "manufactured by honda, u.s.a."

dog has a mazda mpv? i had a 91 ford probe and loved it. great car. got 200K out of it before it got hit. if you pop the hood ... the motor sez, "mazda, u.s.a."

companies like honda, toyota and mazda all have american manufacturing plants ... so making statements like "buy american" are knoble and economicly beneficial, they are kinda outdated in this section of the economy. how bout this ... disposable consumer goods and mass produced items (like toys and chep tools) that say, "made in china" are the items that are hurting our economy and shrinking american jobs. dont buy them.

and i still love fords. if i could have gotten an escape ... i would have. i just cant afford one. dig that ... sub par manufacturing that is gonna require me to work on it within 5 years (but i can work on it ... why i like ford) and that costs more. something wrong with that!

heres the next step.

amy has a civic hybrid. its a really cool car! almost 40mpg? awesome! and its got plenty of power. i dont know where the body or the motor was manufactured but i do know that the batteries that make this a hybrid are manufactured in s. korea and the hybrid assemblies are from japan making this car expensive.

amy's dad has a prius ... also very cool (i prefer the honda) but all japanese and quite pricey.

this is currently where american car companies are behind. hybrid technology is available but the manufacturing isnt, making these cars either toyota, honda, or extremely expensive because the batteries are shipped from the far east.

its annoying that a company like gm needs to be told what to do by the govt. that gave them a bail out loan, to build battery plants and hybrid vehicle technology if they want to survive. they have followed that direction (because they wanted that govt. money) but they drop their name from a section of their company that is actually producing hybrid vehicles, has always been innovative and thinking outside the box, bases their customer service on customer loyalty to them and ... is actually making much nicer cars than gm .... saturn.

i'm sure theres much more to it than i know ... but i just kinda look at it all and go ... scratch

It is true that most Japanese auto makers have plants here in the U.S.A., but I was speaking more in terms of the quality of the design of the product. It like what BD said about American parts engineered to fail after a certain amount of time. Of course, folks will deny this until they're blue in the face, but it is the absolute truth.

In fact, Japanese car buyers will buy a car and drive it for maybe 50 to 100K before replacing it. Then, enterprising American companies take those engines, bring them over here, go through them and completely clean and test them (and in some cases, replace all of the gaskets/rings/seals/etc.), and re-sell them as rebuilt replacement engines. And for a typical Japanese engine, 50 to 100K is barely breaking it in, so getting a rebuilt one with all new parts is like having a brand-new engine.

i've just always been impressed with the design of honda, mazda, nissan and toyota. just real simplistic and user friendly ... as well as being built to last forever with proper maintenance.

there are eastern companies that i question ... hundai, daewoo, kia. i think hundai has been around a while and offers a better engineered product these days ... but i still wouldnt buy one.

i am beginning to mourn the death of american automobiles. i have been watching it deteriorate for years. i had a 1979 trans am that was awesome. cars like this (the super awesome ones!) that americans have money to spend on have become fewer and far between. they have just outgrown their practicality. mustangs and vettes have remained cool ... but when are they gonna come out with a high performance vehicle that has hybrid technology? ... the new tarus SHO looks interesting ... i gotta do some research.

but again ... how long is a SHO gonna last?

my 1991 f-150 got 400K miles out of it ... i think the guy i sold it to is still driving it! when is ford gonna make vehicles like that again?

american auto makers gotta change their game or they are gonna die a gruesome death.

in keeping with MM's theme of what USA car makers could do back then, I had a 76 Pontiac Sunbird...yes 76RWD, not a 86FWD, that had the common 2.5 4cyl/4speed, that got almost 30mpg on the highway, had AC and was reliable till I sold it at almost 200k. The guy I sold it to put the v8 conversion kit in it, and ran a 305-4bbl for almost 2 years. The sunbird of the day you could not order with the 305 like the Chevy Monza, so JCWHITNEY ( remember them )? -- sold a conversion kit for mounts/crossover.

Like anyone in their 40's now, I went thru a LOT of cars in 30 years, some muscle, some luxury, some "work"van/trucks from Ford/GM/Chrysler/Toyota/Nissan, but never had a Honda, but always knew how they are.

my only remaining musclecar from the past 20 years is this one a 1987 Daytona ShelbyZ with the intercooled t2 motor. 200hp@4600 225fpt@3300 (when the tach hits 3 grand it really puts you in the seat ) --and gets about 20mpg in the city/26-27 highway It even has that multifunction COOL 80's style green (fluorescent tube displays they had to use back then) electronic trip computer.

Has about 160k on the clock been 1/4mile raced a hundred times in the 15 years I've owned it and still runs good on the 2nd motor and tranny. 15.1 best time at 104mph.

I've owned a few Daytonas over the years, and here's a collage of them Smile

They have no incentive to change, other than increased profit, and they're already making a ton of money. The government won't let them fail. What? You thought they got a bailout because the government is in the pocket of "big business?" Of course not. The problem is that they employ FAR too many people to just let them go under.

boots, the major effort that is applied to attempt at being knowledgable about certian things like politics is extremely miniscule as to what is truely going on.

like i said ... big business is a funny thing. i dont understand how they can excercise such terrible business practices and still show profit or stay in business. more is going on than i understand.

on the other hand ... to simplify things ... my daddy told me a long time ago, if you ever wondered why people do things the way they do, always follow the dollar.

Your dad was spot on, MadMike. The simple and sad truth is that almost everything today is motivated by the almighty dollar. I think that car companies had more integrity way back in the day, which is why you do see older American cars still running, while newer models don't have the lifespan one would want or expect.

Martin, I also don't have an expert grasp on politics, but I do know a few obvious things. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the vast majority of large businesses seem to let go of the lower, common worker in times of belt-tightening, yet the upper-level management still get their six-figure incomes, bonuses, and perks.

AIG is a prime example. They were handed a nice bailout to "help" them out in the tough times....and they took $400,000 of it to send their top execs on a vacation! Talk about a crock! Evil or Very Mad

^ The media kind of skewed it that way, but thats not what really happened. First of all, they weren't execs. They were people within the company who were not responsible for any of this. Second, they had been promised that bonus. Third, while $400,000 is a lot of money for you and me, it's not that much compared to the amount they were given. Its like someone getting a college loan, then spending a few $100 buying themselves a new iPod.

Now, whether they should have paid them the bonuses when they said they would using the bailout money or just postponed it is in the eye of the beholder, but it didn't nearly warrant the uproar that it caused.

Ah, thank you for clarifying that, KS. This only illustrates just how much I don't know about all of this.

BUT, despite the fact that $400,000 is only a drop in the bucket, I still don't think that the bailout money should have gone to such a thing. That money was intended to get them out of financial trouble, and not to party with. Personally, I think they should have had their promised bonuses frozen until they cleaned house first.

how about, i cant look at it any way other than this .........

our company had the best season with baseball uniform sales and equipment than in the last 7 years. we struggled to find the credit available to purchase the goods to be available to our customers (and after all the "bailouts" the credit companies raised their rates ... so much for our profit) and we pulled it off. the govt didnt provide business like ours any support in these difficult times. creating baseball uniforms vs. managing a multi billion dollar financial institution ... #1, i cant do their job and they couldnt do mine, but do i work that much less harder than one of these execs on a daily basis to justify the difference in pay? i think not. #2 members of this organization (employees) are participating (working) at a company that is a failure ... and they got a bonuses for that? (bonuses that were 3X my annual salary) i bust my butt for 10 hours a day and bent over backwards to meet deadlines (opening day and tournaments that players need uniforms for). we had very minimal mistakes and 0% dissatisfaction from our customers ... i didnt get a bouns for that. heres my bonus ... i get to still have a job with a company that has no health insurance plan. (did barak fix that yet???)

promised those bonuses? get the heck outta here. i've had promises broken regularly ... thats the way it is ... get over it and get back to work. (wusses)

yes, the news media has a way of getting hype about a story and blowing things out of proportion but i dont think i can have any compassion for employees who knowingly worked for a company who participated in government regulated worldwide mortgage fraud.

... and i've seen it recently. we working class folk who have these billion dollar executives come to us for our services .... they pay more. if they chime up and complain about the price ... we refuse to do the job for them. when they call before the deadline to dit dit dit about whatever they feel like they shud be deserving (like their stuff before the deadline) we dont answer the phone and their job goes to the end of the line. i got enuff people who make a hardworking living, and are grateful that we treat them with respect as a customer, who just want their kid to play little league to make jerseys for rather than a customer who comes to us with their premeditated expectations of being exempt and exclusive. we working class arent tolerating it anymore. you want more separation between the classes ... you got it.

compassion and perspective for aig execs or its employees? ... Evil or Very Mad
