seismic audio cabinet Empty
PostSubject: seismic audio cabinet   seismic audio cabinet EmptyThu Jul 16, 2009 3:49 am

been having problems just getting the low end response out of my 15" carvin cabinet. its a sealed cabinet with a 3" port with a peavey black widow. fact of the matter is that from the start, this cabinet is just not tuned properly for this speaker.

so i got a decent speaker with the black widow so i thought i'de try this ....

http://cgi.ebay.com/115-Bass-Speaker-Cabinet-EMPTY-PA-DJ-1x15-Cab_W0QQitemZ370229420882QQcategoryZ23794QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m183QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%252BS%252BIA%26itu%3DSI%252BUS-BWR%252BUCI%252BIA%252BUCC%252BPSS%252BCRS%252BIT%252BUA%26otn%3D12%26ps%3D33

... the dimensions and ports are better suited to be tuned with my 15".

heres my review.

this thing looks real nice. much better than what i had. i'm happy overall with the purchase and the fact that i saved about $150 ... but remember ... you get what you pay for.

its not plywood. its that re-glued together particle board stuff. my girlfriend collects stickley type furniture so neither of us are a friend to this kinda manufacturing. again ... its functional, not boutique.

there is a parallel wired set of prewired 1/4" jacks installed on a dish in the back. just drop the speaker in, hook it up and mount it ... right? the prewiring didnt work! i swiped the old wiring out of my old 15" carvin. not a major deal, but it just ticked me off. it wasted my time having to take this thing apart again and fix it. didnt they put a meter on this thing after manufacturing to test it? i'm embarassed these days with stuff like this being the standard of quality that manufactured in the u.s.a.

it didnt come lined with aquistic baffeling foam or fiberglass on the inside. i bought real nice foam with psa stickey stuff on the back and hooked it up.

it didnt come with casters.

and they mounted their logo smack dab on the lower center on the grill. i understand that and i know i can just take it off. the psa material they use to mount this logo is like cement. so now i dont have a logo, but i have a big foamy, gooey, stickey glob of black adhesive on the front of the cabinet. furreal, i wudda been ok if they stuck in the lower left corner. i gotta find some chemical to break this goop down now ... alcohol and nail polish remover didnt work.

if you know what speakers you want or have them already and are looking for decent cabs, i'de recomend these but i'de just tell someone to remember that this isnt top of the line.

Seismic Audio has been selling on eBay for quite some time, and I have considered getting their cabs more than a few times. Assuming that the wood joints are sound, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't work for you just fine.

the work that i've done to this cabinet so far (banging the edges of the corners down and flipping it this way and that to get it together) has had me feel like the joints are pretty solid. any other shortcomming i've had with it has been overcome, so yeah ... aside from "breaking it in" at practice on sunday, with the work that i've done to it, i'm happy with my purchase.

its much better than what i had in several ways!

after i use it for a few months, i'll let you know how its holding up.

seismic audio also has a 2x15 cabinet that looks interesting. maybe a future project.

I'd love to have a 2x15 or two. Wow those cabinets are cheap...they're all under $200. I like cheap, but that sounds a little too cheap, you know?

Damn it...now I just want more gear. Thanks, dude. Laughing

I swear, the site that never fails to get me wanting stuff is Carvin's website. Mesa is a close second, but their gear is so damn expensive. Carvin is the perfect balance between good quality and that 'metal factor' that comes from being kinda cheap, but still awesome, you know? Some day, I want an all Carvin rig. Those Mono Block heads look killer. So do their 8x10 cabs. Mmh Carvin, why are you so tasty looking?

this cabinet performed well yesterday. i'm getting a much better, tighter and louder low end bass response. my rig sounded much more balanced with the highs to mids crossed over and the new cabinet for the lows on the bottom. i think i just got lucky (or i cant hear it) that theres no dropoff or peaks anywhere from the lows to highs.

we'll see how the quality holds up from practice to practice and hopefully soon from gig to gig.

i want bigger casters for it .... perhaps 4" (my 4 wheel drive cabinet?).

Cool! I'm glad to hear it! Those BW speakers are killer. The 18s I have sound great, but I prefer 15s over 18s any day, so I'll bet that thing is awesome. Glad you got a cab to suit it!

Haha make a little All Terrain Cabinet out of it?

Oh damn. Yeah I remember when I was bringing my Mesa cab home and it's very top/front heavy compared to my other cabs on wheels (due to all those drivers and the height) and I tubed it in the middle of the street. It fell flat on its face with me on top of it. I stood it upright, brought it inside, and it worked (and still works) perfectly. Burly stuff, that. Cool
