Suits me perfect. Got the look, big agressive sound that I dig, plays like a T-Bird, kinda, just without neckdive, and its got super upper access.

Oh, and me and Eric have discussed the possiblity of a trem on it....... Wink I may, just do that, just as I may stereo mod it.

So far, I put a thumbrest between the neck pickup and the bridge one, so far so good. Cool

You and your ramps and rests, dude! Laughing

I think it's cool. I've always liked them, but it's just not how I play. It's nice to see people who dig them. They seem classic, like something you'd see on a 50s P or a 60s T-bird. I dig it. Probably would look sick on a Ric. pirat So not to say that either one of us is wrong or better than the other, we're just different. And I think that's badass. Very Happy

Can you take a closeup of the pickup area and the thumb rest?

How is the bridge pickup cover working for you?

Hey dude, everyone's different. Makes life fun!Cool

Like Fender's with covers, love 'em, can't play with 'em though! More power to those who can!

Here's the thumbrest, chromed out to suit the Ricky style! Laughing
Not quite a Ricky, Shine RK2000NT. Photo-0221

The bridge cover, at first was a huge problem for me, couldn't do anything....

But, now I thumbplant it, for playing by the bridge.
I have the rest for playing in front of it.
And I rest my palm on it when with a pick.

I might leave it be, as I seem to be getting used to it quickly.

Exactly!! bounce

I know. I think the covers look so classy. Especially on Rickenbackers, but I could totally see them getting in my way if I were to seriously jam on one. I use my thumb to mute the strings below what I'm picking. Like when I'm picking on the E string, it's not doing anything, on the A string, my thumb's on the E string, when I'm playing the D string, it's on E and A, etc. So It's a "floater"! Laughing So my thumb's always busy in it's own way, you know? That's just the system I've worked out. Seems to work okay for now.

That chrome thumb rest looks fantastic, man! How's it mounted onto there?

My biggest problem with playing with a pick is wrist support. The cover does sound like an excellent aid for using a pick. Good point.

It just occurred to me--you never see a bass with a Kahler that has pickup covers on it. If you show me a picture of one, I will literally send you a pack of strings. But I don't think I have. And I think it'd look awesome. That's kinda why I want to see you put a Kahler on this bass, Bill!

Ah, I often use the floating thumb too, thats exactly what I use the thumbrest for, when I'm playing on the E, then I float up.

The rest is just on with double sided sticky tape, easily reversable, I made it myself, outta mirror perspex.

The cover does help with wrist support, its true, but it takes getting used to, I'm still not quite there.

The Kahler and cover combo, don't really work with regular Rickys, as the cover is close to the strings, this one has a lot of air room for big Kahler warbles.

Fenders, I just dunno why.....

We'll see, it's working well stock, so I'll leave it for a bit, and decide on the Kahler later.

(frantically searches the web looking for picture of bass with Kahler and pickup covers)

Laughing

Man, Bill! That bass is SWEET! I think you've got a real winner there! And as we've talked about before, even though I would be hesitant to put a Kahler on an actual Ric with the wonky string angles at the headstock, your version is perfectly suited for a trem. In fact, I might have to get me one of those! I've always loved the look, feel, and sound of Rics. Can you post the link to the place that makes them?

I will, too! If you find one or make one, I WILL send you a packet of strings...within reasonable price limits! Reasonable meaning "at my discretion". Laughing

Want some Swing 66s, Eric? Or some TIs, Bill? Razz I think it's worth $30+ to see something that's never been done before. Just for the **** of it. Very Happy

Well...to be totally honest Martin, while I love the vintage vibe look of pickguard covers, I can't stand playing with them on. So I would probably put them on one of my basses and send you a picture, then quickly remove them! Laughing

How about a lovely set of Target branded Washburn strings? Laughing

Honestly, I can't compare.

As I don't have a Ricky. Sad

I have a slight feeling that it sounds quite the same as a Ricky that's had the Duncans installed. Laughing

Oh Martin, I was thinking, I may leave this stock, and later on, pick up a second for to mod.

As in, trem, Model One at the neck, Model J at the bridge, and so on. Cool

I haven't decided yet.

Heh, peer pressue dosen't exactly work on me, I'm kinda gonna do whatever I like regardless of anyone, but a trem is a good idea for the bass, as the bridge pickup is really powerful.

for cheap strings I saw the thread in TB about sam ash closing out all the guitar research strings....

66 cents a pack for 45-100 light gauge. they came to 10.87 bucks shipped for 12 sets, and I ordered 2 dozen more, cause all he TBer's are buying 50-100 sets and they wont last forever.....

it says 2.00 a pack till you checkout and get the discount.

I just got them today, so I'll let you know what they sound like this weekend....

if they are good enough to use, I'll just bet you that on EBAY there will be a huge increase of sellers selling these things trying to get 2-5 bucks a pack for them.

how long they last will be something to see, but who cares if they last a couple months that's plenty of time.

No need to panic, Madmike. Laughing From what I can tell, Washburn now produces an economy line of guitars, basses, strings, pedals, and other accessories that are licensed to be sold specifically at Target stores. These items are obviously (no pun intended) targeted at kids/people wanting to start out into music. These products have next to nothing to do with the very superior line of "regular" guitars and basses Washburn produces that we are all familiar with. In fact, I have come extremely close to owning a Washburn bass more than a few times, and I still might add one to my arsenal one day.

I think the mentality is a sound one, if not a bit devious:

"Mom! Look! A bass for only $99! Can I get one? CanIcanIcanI?"

Not all of these types of sales will lead to producing active musicians, but for many it will. And for those that do so, I think that the up-sell potential is obvious:

"I like this bass, but I want a better one. Hey! Washburn has a website? COOL! Let me see what they have. OOOHHH!!! Lookey there! They actually make even better basses!"

Laughing
