You can pull up on the strings, just be careful not to pull too much, otherwise you will either stretch out your strings flat, or even break one.

I like to hit a harmonic, and then pull up on it by maybe a step or so. I also like lowering the bar just slightly, holding a note, then bringing the bar back up to pitch so that the note starts low, but then settles into pitch.

I did a song called FareWell that is built around this technique- This was before my Digitech Whammy, so it is using the Rd & harmonics for the high lead part. The bass part was my 68 non reverse Tbird
