To X2N or not to X2N Empty
PostSubject: To X2N or not to X2N   To X2N or not to X2N EmptyMon Mar 23, 2015 5:07 am

This ASAT jazz bass thing I'm building. It's come time to select pickups.

I've always wanted to try Nordstrand fat stacks .... but I can't afford that. I looked at the tesla coronas again and they aren't lighting the fire.

I don't want to resort to a pj setup. I hate split P humbuckers. I find them ugly but tonal functionality, I've found that set up to have it all. Grrr.

I would love to have a bass with a darkstar. Again, very pricey.

then I thought about it. A lot of you guys use or have used X2N's.

if I went that way, I have enough drop, I could make mahogany covers.

if I went that way ........

one? Two? Is it a specific tone that I would want to pair it with a different pickup? Pair with what?

Where to place em. If I put one in a neck position, would it pick up neck position lower end frequencies or is the X2N a midrange and high end frequency pickup only? If I go one, would I put it in a MM position like a single darkstar?

How would wood covers effect tone?

The other options are vintage jazz singles with a ming's like my tarus or, wait another 6 months till I can just buy a high end electronics and pickup system.

I was strongly considering getting a X2N for my fretless build, I know some people with Yamaha Attitudes who replaced the model one neck pickup with a X2N and really liked the results.
If I was going to use one I was thinking about using it as a bridge pick up. Ultimately I decided going with a P, J and a model one at the neck and am very happy with how it turned out.
From the sounds of it anywhere you use it can sound good whether as a clean low end pickup or a midrangey overdrive pick up.

Part of the reason I decided not to try one was I had no first hand experience with them and felt the risk was too high and I didn't want to get this bass made and not be happy with the results and stuck with a ugly routed mess if I put in different pick ups. No regrets as I feel like the pick up choices I made with my fretless were an improvement on my TF Fretless which already sounds amazing.

I kinda find those split P humbuckers ugly aswell but you could use different pick up covers. I think the WillPower P picks up are splits actually.

Keep in mind Gents that the X2N is actually a bass pickup at its heart. DiMarzio (if my sources are to be believed) designed the X2N guitar pickup based on a bass design they had.

Granted, I have gone a different route lately, having secured a lot of attention for D'Haitre Guitars from EMG, plus the performance of the actives has been SICK! Even my good bud John Gallagher of Raven has switched out his X2N that has sat for so many years in his red Explorer.

But I will always love the X2N for its un-matched scream, as well as its tonal response. It truly is an amazing pickup IMHO.

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with DiMarzio. They have proven to be so incredibly consistent over the years.
