Les Paul standard-this is a chambered body one

My favorite number 1 non trem bass P1000683

I know they don't get a lot of respect on some sites, but I got to tell you, it's a great bass. It was a warm ballsy tone. Plug it into a big muff or overdrive and you get Billy Gibbons, a biting gritty sound, much like the guitar. The pickups are super high output. Once I had it set up it plays great as well. The body shape was weird at first, but I keep coming back to this bass. I would love to hear one of you guys play one.

The build quality is top notch on mine as well. The Warwick bridge has 1000 adjustments in every direction possible.

Sweet! The only Gibson I've owned is a 68 EB-3, I didn't care for it much but I would love have a Les Paul.

Man I love them, I'd have one now, only for the price of them here, its like 1800 euros* local, I almost bought one in the US, but it was that or my Roscoe Beck.

I heard one played with a pick recently, man, sounded incredible, you know that clean grindy tone, beautiful.......

Well, if one pops up cheap sometime in the future, I'd be all over it.

Barkless, know if the old Epi model is any good, could score one of them......

Oh, and trivia, Duff used to have one, played it in a lot of live shows, some are on Yout00b, sounds great in his hands too.

*(Woah I was wrong!) 2099 euros...

The epi is a different beast all together, bolt on neck alder body different pick ups. Even the Gibson all mahogany flat top & faded carved top ones sound different. The secret for the Standard is in the all mahogany construction (neck ) that gives it warmth, the ebony board & maple top which add the bite & the super high output pickups.

Sometimes when playing through my Black Big Muff I accidentally get Billy Gibsons style pinched harmonics, which I try to recreate, but fail to do so on command. The bass "sings".

I went to a guitar shop and the guy who worked there showed me his new reissue 59 Les Paul 6 string guitar. He says you know why this guitar kicks arse. He goes over to thiis smallish amp & plugs it in & right out of the box it sounds like the "Les Paul " tone like Gary Moore has, no effects, just over driven gritty warmth.

You overdrive the bass and you get the same thing. Its so cool to get that tone out of a bass. The normal "bass sound kicks arse as well for rock. All you need to use is a fuzz or overdrive on the bass and you got that tone. It also is very versitle, sound wise. The great thing about the toggle is you can do fast switch flipping Ala Bucket head or Tom Morello for a really cool effect, where you turn off all the volume on one pickup & switch back n forth really fast. Buckt head is amazing when he does it on his white LP style guitar. He has his toggle near the bridge.

My Blueshawk is the complete opposite that it has single coils that are thin, but use effects with it and you can get that clean Fender Strat sound.

These two I have been using the most as of late.

Its funny but the neck is slightly chunky, but not baseball bat like. At first, before I had it set up it, felt thick, but after the set up it plays really fast, probably I can play the fastest on this bass vs my others. It also is comfortable because the neck is set in the body nicely compared to my other basses. You dont need gorilla arms.

Not sure about the fret board radius.

Ah man, you make it sound incredible! One of my fave guitars is a Les Paul, would sure dig a bass one.

As for radius, I just ment, is it flatter, or round? No need for specs.

This picture shows the radius if you look at the frets

When I first got the bass from a guy at the old Dude Pit, it felt really odd. The curved top is really strange and there is not a lot of room to anchor your thumb on it. With a pick though you can slay with it. String bending sounds great on it as well. Harmonics are OK, sustain is great.

And from what you say, it sounds and plays as good as it seems, ugh, I though I just killed my gas.

You can hear hear it on this song Finger snake

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=578947&songID=6225001

I used it for most the song except the horn like parts wich were my Rd & Kahler. The ultra high warbly stuff was two octives up using the toggle

At 15 seconds into the song you can hear the LP's biting almost crybaby sound. I used a Digitech Whammy with a black big muff.

I can't play nearly as good as a lot of you guys, thats why I would die to hear you guys play one.

What is the Dudepit? I've heard it mentioned lots, but I never investigated...

Wow, man. I agree with Darkstrike. You have me GASin' pretty bad, here. Ah well. I know I'm an Ibanez Roadstar addict....can't waste any more money on anything else! lol!

The way you describe it has me sold on that thing, though. I want to play one some day. So they still make 'em? That's good to know Wink

So that Warwick bridge is stock? What's the scale length?

Standard scale, tuneomatis bridge is stock, and no, they do not make them any more, Epi, or Gibson.

I have a line on a few Gibsons, two used, two new, but can't afford.

ESP one that looks sweet too, mahogany body, maple and walnut set neck, tuneomatic bridge, emgs, in the Gibson position, won't sound the same, but should be good.

Oh, and Dudepit was a bass forum, I believe..

Huh. Sucks how the good stuff is always discontinued. That's a Gibson bass I'd love to have What a Face

Yeah...I saw Carcass live in September and Jeff Walker was using a custom Eclipse...

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=316856434&albumID=903276&imageID=7221378

Looked like it had EMG-35TW, the ones that have a single coil and a humbucker inside of them. I think it looks sick...but I don't know how it'd look on anyone else. He's a really small dude!

That one's sweet looking too.

I need to convince someone that the Gibson, or ESP would be a perfect present for me, birthday, or Christmas.... lol!

Now that's a good-lookin' bass, Bill!

Martin, the DudePit is another community of bass players. It's run by Steve "Dude" Barr who had a shop in Santa Rose, CA for a while before moving to Arizona. The forum used to have a look and feel kind of like this place, but now Steve runs it from a different site. It's located at:

http://thedudepit.ning.com/

I am not sure if the current DudePit enjoys as much traffic as the old site did, but it's still a cool place. Steve has been doing a lot of things related to production work lately, and I am not sure how heavily he is still involved in bass work at this point.

I met Steve at the Friends of Francois show I did in Mt. View CA back in 2002, and he has always been a good friend. In fact, it was Steve that gave me the VibroTek Double-Whammy bass tremolo system mounted in an ESP bass.
