String Tension Question. Empty
PostSubject: String Tension Question.   String Tension Question. EmptyTue Nov 12, 2013 9:12 am

Will pulling up on the bar loosen the tension of the strings over time?
Now, I don't pull up on the bar often, in fact I try to avoid it except maybe hitting a harmonic and shaking the bar upwards slightly,
But after watching this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW9-vqqiRVs
I couldn't help but messing around with playing a lick then pulling up the bar at the end of it like Steve was talking about.
I don't really notice anything til the morning of a recording, when I was packing up and deciding what bass to record with.
I wanted to take my Kahler Attitude, but figured I'd plug in my LTD3 and see how it felt and noticed instantly the strings had more tension and thus was easier to play.
Somewhat disappointingly, I took the LTD3 instead. I had wanted to sneak some bass tremolo onto the song.
Now, I know pulling up stretches the strings and thus seems like common sense that they would lose tension over time if you did it often enough but I figured I'd run it by the expects here.

I'll chime in here first, although I will readily admit that my experience with pulling up on the bar is limited, as I have always said that you run an even greater risk of going out of tune.

I would expect that, if one were to pull up hard and often enough, that you would gradually lose string tension, since you are stretching the strings each time. But yet again, I do not do this too often as a rule, so I may not be the best one to ask anyways.

Guys? Your thoughts and/or experience?

I never pulled up on it too hard, because of your mentioning of the risk of going out of tune.
I figure when I have a new set of strings on hand, then I'II see how high you can go til a string breaks

Or maybe not haha.

I dunno when I buy strings they cost around 5bucks a pack Chinese rotosound rebrands so if they break I dont panic.
If I pull up a bunch of times then check tuning it is a little flat, and most times not even enough to notice.

I pull up ... a lot.

Yes, it stretches out the strings. Newer strings are more resilliant.

If everything is working properly it should stay close to in tune. Sometimes its a little flat after a dive and shrp after  a pull up.
