Rough Cutt's song "Black Widow" is one of the few studio recordings that I know of that features a bass tremolo. His use of the Kahler in this song really brings it to life.

He used a number of basses with Kahler trems. One of them was a Fenderish maple necked bass with dual EMG P pickups (with which he can be seen in some concert footage on YouTube). Hew owned at least two Jackson custom shop Kellys, one of which I ...

I once asked him via email why he didn't continue using Kahlers, and his reply was that he could never get them to stay in tune. I explained to him that the reason was that the string angles on his basses all go off at extreme angles. He seemed to accept this, but expressed that he was no longer interested in experimenting with bass ...

Nikki does own a Thunderbird bass with a Kahler, and I remember seeing pictures of him with it back in the mid-80's. A few years later, I saw that same bass with the arm removed, and some sort of handle bar bolted along the top of the frame. This led me to believe that Nikki no longer wanted to use the trem. Furthermore, I suspect this modification was the inspiration for the Opti-grab handle featured on his signature line of Thunderbird basses.

Believe it or not, Scott Smith of Loverboy was indeed an early Kahler endorser. I have never found any images of him with any Kahlerized bass, but I do recall seeing his name in a Kahler ad that listed famous users. Tragically, Scott died in November of 2000 during a boat trip near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco when he was swept overboard by a large wave. His body was never found. Scott was only 45 when he died.

I clearly recall during the 80's seeing some of the very first ads for Kahler bass tremolos featuring Ben Orr of The Cars. I cannot say for certain what, if any, recordings were made while he used one, but he was definitely one of the very first endorsers of Kahlers. Sadly, Ben passed away from cancer in October of 2000 at the age of 53.

It's a Fender Precision that has been strung with piccolo strings, and to the best of my knowledge, he doesn't use it all that much. I don't have a picture of him holding this bass, but I do recall and ad for DiMarzio with him and Steve Vai where he is holding this bass. Billy's website is at: www.billysheehan.com

Stanley was usually caught neck-in-neck with Jaco Pastorius, with fans of both fighting over which one held the title of "the best bassist on the planet". Stanley's use of his Alembic bass with Bigsby tremolo can be heard on his album I Wanna Play For You (shown below), as well as on his work with the 1970's prog fusion band Return To Forever.
